  1. Thanks for that, i will get a spare set of coils off the bay, the tank vent looks clear is there a foolproof way of checking that it is venting properly?..i noticed there isnt a vent pipe leading from the vent stub at the base of the tank ,but AFAIK there never has been one.
  2. Mate, i've been through just about everything i can think of and still cant get it to run right, carbs have been stripped half a dozen times ,ultrasonically cleaned with new O rings and needle jets ,float heights are all correct...bike will start as normal from cold and runs with a bit of a stutter for 3 or 4 miles with no loss of power, then when i slow down for traffic or traffic lights it will not pick up or rev in low gears, like its not getting fuel, if i leave it for half an hour or more its ok again until it repeats the problem...its doing my nut in, seriously thinking about taking it to a pro garage .
  3. Thinking about swapping the OE fuel tap on my 88J for a Pingel tap, still having problems which seem like fuel starvation and carbs not getting enough juice ,and although expensive it might be worth it to sort my probs out. So looking at the Pingel dual outlet tap which is specified for my bike i dont see any provision for the vacuum pipe currently fitted to the OE tap which attaches to number 2 carb top, how do the carbs work with the Pingel in this case?...forgive my ignorance but they are vacuum fed arent they?
  4. Thanks for the replies chaps, i got all the bits from wemoto...I'm led to believe they are closest quality to Mikuni. I Did actually bench test them and they didn't leak..I went through everything meticulously and everything was clinically spotless...or so I thought...looks like I'm gonna have to strip it all down yet again , a PIA cos it's running pretty well.
  5. I stripped the carbs down and had them ultrasonically cleaned then replaced all o rings and the needle jets just before i refitted them , shouldnt have leaked but i wont be leaving it on Prime again anytime soon.
  6. Changed the oil as soon as I realised...hopefully should be OK.
  7. After refitting my carbs i turned the fuel switch on my 88J to Prime ,it started OK and i let it idle for a good five or ten minutes ....then like a twat i forgot to turn it back to 'ON' and left it overnight on Prime, after i realised what i had done i had a whiff of the oil filler cap and there was a definite smell of petrol, looks like it had fooded past the pistons etc. I drained the old oil and gave it a fresh lot....will i have done any damage?
  8. Carbs have now gone for ultrasonic cleaning, I removed all jets, emulsion tubes, white plastic slide housings, slides ,diaphragms and O rings, i also unscrewed and removed the pilot/mixture screws after making an accurate note that they were all screwed out 1 and a quarter turns, I've ordered new quality fuel pipe and a pair of inline filters...looking forward to getting it all back together ,in some ways I wish i'd not touched em in the first place!
  9. Thanks, Emulsion tube holes were clear it was the pilot jets that were blocked.
  10. Now i'm getting really baffled...I recently fitted a brand new fuel tap cos the old one was goosed , the inside of the tank is shiny spotless with no sign of ANY rust anywhere, apart from fitting a pair of plastic inline fuel filters what else should I be cleaning?...now the carbs are off I will still get them sonic blasted ,wont do any harm...thanks.
  11. Getting back to the original thread...I stripped the carbs off the bike again yesterday ready for my mate to take then for vapour blasting and all the pilot jets were blocked, pretty sure they were clear last time I had it apart a couple of weeks ago!...would explain the shit idle and low speed running, is it customary to remove floats/jets /emulsion tubes and diaphragms when sending the carbs to be blasted or do I leave everything in situ?....ta.
  12. Just when I thought I had got things sorted, went out for a run this afternoon and the bike starts and runs fine from cold, after about ten miles I hit a bit of traffic and the motor was getting pretty hot and the bike started running like a bag of nails, struggling to pull away in first and second but once in third and gathering speed it smooths out and flies, the bike normally idles good from cold but when hot this afternoon it was struggling to keep a steady idle and easily stalled...i'm just about ready to pull what hair I;ve got left out!!...what is going on ?
  13. Yeah I know...the way petrol is going up every week, maybe i'm overreacting, I fitted new fuel tap before reassembling carbs and refitting it all back together, the old one wasn't working properly in Prime position, and to be fair I have been giving it the bollox ...just to check the carburation...LOL.
  14. Checked and adjusted valve clearances and bike is now running almost as it should , i'll get round to taking it to my local friendly bike garage to get the carbs properly balanced as soon as I can , I treated it to a dose of that Profi fuel Max carb cleaner and it does seem to have smoothed things out a bit, one thing I have noticed though ,it seems to be drinking quite a bit more juice than it was, I put a fivers worth in and got less than 20 miles on it, I used to get closer to 30ish...not sure what could be causing that?
  15. Yeah I know.. I've already put new plugs /air filter in it, i'll get round to valve clearances and getting the carbs properly balanced asap, ....thanks.
  16. Got the bike running!...just took it for a test flight and its about 90% running right, theres a bit of reluctance and fluffiness when pulling away and it needs revving a bit before it clears its throat and takes off but its a lot better than what it was, mid and top range revs cleanly and it flies!....Factory manual says poor low speed running points to pilot jets, i'm reluctant to strip the carbs off again if I can help it though I might have to ,i'm gonna feed it some of that Pro FST carby stuff first and see if theres any improvement...thanks for all the invaluable help from you lads, much appreciated.
  17. I bought a factory manual just last week, far more in depth and informative than the Haynes ,I will hopefully get the carbs all reassembled this weekend ,i'm taking my time to make sure everything is as it should be before I fit them back on the bike.
  18. Another novice question, please bear with me and thanks for your patience...how do you remove and replace the needle float valve without breaking anything?...how do you get it past the metal tab ?
  19. Hi All, looking at possibly buying a 1986 1100 slabby, i'm told it was originally a Dutch model ,can any of you knowledgeable chaps tell me if the spec is the same as Uk?...ie.as in being restricted etc . Thanks.
  20. Just another quick one...is a smear of Vaseline ok when fitting new carb o rings or should I fit them dry?
  21. Thanks for all the good advice...quick question, I have somehow managed to mix up the emulsion tubes, i had intended to put each one back in the carb it came from, will it make any difference?
  22. Whats the best way to clean/unblock the tiny holes in the emulsion tubes, just bought a can of compressed air and some carb cleaner, I was going to leave the tubes soaking in the carb cleaner for a couple of days then block one end off and give them a good blast ...is there a better way anyone can recommend?...thanks.
  23. Checked everything, just ordered a new set of o ring kits of Eblag to be on the safe side, they should be here in time for the weekend when i'll attempt to get the bike running so that its rideable!...fingers crossed.
  24. Managed to push out emulsion tubes and blown everything clean ,o rings look ok so I've left them alone,Is there anything else I should be looking at before I reassemble carbs and refit them on the bike?...thanks .
  25. Removed carbs off bike again this afternoon, took float bowls off, inspected the seals and all are Ok, took mains and pilot jets out and blew them through, a couple of the mains were partly blocked with muck, took carb tops off and all diaphragms are ok, again tiny 0 rings are all in place, silly novice question...which are the emulsion tubes I need to be blowing out?...and thanks.
