Crank drilling???....

Counterbore the first 2mm to full thread diameter - once you're past the case hardening, it should be ok to tap.

I could look at making back plate that would bolt onto the the sprocket like you mention, I don't want too much unnecessary weight over that way as I don't want to bugger the output shaft bearing......it am I over thinking...O.o

You will only need to make a plate out of max 2mm steel so no real weigh there ;)

I was think of say a U shaped peace of steel with one hole to bolt the Speedo trigger to and two bolt holes to bolt to the f/sprocket.
