alexl Posted March 10, 2017 Posted March 10, 2017 Just mocking up a GS frame with B12 swingarm and trying to work out where to position the lower shock mount. and need a bit of help with the standard shock lengths and the angle of the shocks. Will probably raise the rear a bit, but dont want to do anything too extreme. Thanks Quote
Swiss Toni Posted March 10, 2017 Posted March 10, 2017 Funnily enough, I was on the phone to Hagon yesterday about more or less the same thing. B12 arm into 1100 ET frame. I was needing to know std. ET shock length to position lugs on swinger for welding, which was 330mm between centres. Closed eye top - forked bottom end. Hagon will supply shocks closed eyes top & bottom in 10mm increments from 280mm - 370mm. Give him a call. Very helpfull guy! 020 8502 6222 Quote

Do you happen to know the angle of the rear shock in relation to the swingarm, just to try to get the bottom eye in the correct(ish) position. Quote
Swiss Toni Posted March 10, 2017 Posted March 10, 2017 Can't help you there but, if you set your frame up level and put an angle finder on the 'arm, it's been said that the optimum 'arm angle is between 12 and 15 degrees. Incidentally, you say 'shock'. Are you mono or twin shocking it? Will try and be more specific when home. Quote
alexl Posted March 10, 2017 Author Posted March 10, 2017 Will be twin shock. B12 arm, gs motor. will set it up as you suggest, want to raise the back a bit , but not go too mad. Cheers Quote
alexl Posted March 10, 2017 Author Posted March 10, 2017 Yes. Correct, a sort of mini Racefit. Gs550 frame with a gs550 bottom end, 650 top end taken out to 740cc. Need some nice carbs next, then exhaust, then......... Quote
alexl Posted March 10, 2017 Author Posted March 10, 2017 Usd from a 91 gsxr M, but the discs are toast, looks like they have been attacked with a grinding disc. nothing else apart from slingshot discs seems to fit, but sticking with it as everything else seems okay. 5.5 with a 180 on the back seems to fit okay, need to brace the frame a bit and was thinking of shifting the top shock mount, but not sure now. standard 550 tank and tail, will make the seat base. agemax Posted March 11, 2017 Posted March 11, 2017 what else are you doing to beef up the motor? crank and clutch will need beefing up at least, running 740cc on a stock 550 crank is not adviseable. Quote

I heard the crank is well over engineered and should be ok. But any advice on what to do would be good. Clutch is getting stronger springs. But again open to any advice on that too. It's all apart, so now is the time to make any changes. Quote
buff Posted March 11, 2017 Posted March 11, 2017 (edited) Dont forget to take into account that modern wide wheels have a lower profile tyre. The maxtons i used on my last twin shock gsx where 385mm and that gave me about standard height Edited March 11, 2017 by buff Quote

markfoggy Posted March 19, 2017 Posted March 19, 2017 Simple answer to shock angle is about 45 degrees. 5 in either direction won't harm much, but you get very subtle changes of spring force over the travel. Higher than 45 gives rising rate, lower is falling = less good. Ideal is 45 at mid travel. Quote
alexl Posted March 19, 2017 Author Posted March 19, 2017 Just setting up the swingarm angle with the new sprocket sizes. Next onto the shock angle. I will aim for 45° Quote
Swiss Toni Posted March 20, 2017 Posted March 20, 2017 If you could get hold of a couple of short (9" or so) 'Bottle Screws', you could fit them as substitute shocks, altering length/height to suit your needs as to angle/height of seat rails. Have a bit play. 'Owt's do-able with a bit fucking around! Having said that, I don't think you'll be too far out with Buff's 385mm! Quote
alexl Posted March 21, 2017 Author Posted March 21, 2017 Has anyone moved the standard shock mounts on a GS frame in order to get the correct shock angle but with more of a lift for the subframe. Quote
