Builtwithpurehate Posted November 20 Posted November 20 (edited) I'm collecting parts to rebuild a 78 gs1000 engine and wanted to know what the collective here would do "while I'm in here...." I have 2 and a half stock motors to build 1 from. I have oversized pistons and full gasket sets, I will port and clean up the heads and planning on using the factory valves. I've seen a few things about 750/850 cam swaps - would like your suggestions. Anything you all can recommend that should be done while in here? Edited November 20 by Builtwithpurehate Quote
BigT Posted November 21 Posted November 21 Two things I can think of: Somewhere late in 78, Suzuki added a bolt at the front of the head to mitigate leaks. If you have that combo, start there. (my 89k mile motor, with a 1085 kit, doesn't have one) According to a race engine builder, setting the cam timing accurately is the best cheap horsepower Quote
Swiss Toni Posted November 21 Posted November 21 Have a look at the camchain, guide & tensioner. 1 Quote
Reinhoud Posted November 23 Posted November 23 The GS1000 loves a ported / gasflowed head! It also loves a big bore and/with higher CR, a set of cams with at least 1mm more lift.. What Swiss Toni says, check the tensioner, or better, replace it with a manual one straight away. Quote
Builtwithpurehate Posted November 24 Author Posted November 24 Fantastic, I appreciate the advice yall. Quote
Rijko Posted November 26 Posted November 26 GS750 oil pump gears improve oil flow. Replace the weak original clutch hub nut with the stronger GS1150 one (https://www.cmsnl.com/products/nut_0914024014/) They tend to come loose, not with the GS1150 one or the more expensive APE replacement. Choose the best starter clutch, most are damaged. Compare your camshafts, some GS1000 models came with some .5 mm higher lift ones. Check the cam chain is not stretched. Slotted cam wheels, degreed, wake the bike up. As do carbs like Mikuni VM29SS smoothbore or Keihin CR. Personally i would overhaul the original cam chain tensioner. That's just replacing the o-ring and oil seal, easy job and cheap. The automatic one works great and is very robust. Choose the best stator, some are really burnt or already failing. Quote

I have 2x engines and a set of bare cases, thinking ill rob the completed ones to build up the cases. Lots of good information, thank you. 1 Quote
BigT Posted December 11 Posted December 11 The clutch hub itself is a weak point. I think kits are available from APE still 1 Quote
