The guy says it's a 91 gsxr 1100 motor. If it's out of the frame then you can take off the rocker cover and check if it's got shim head which the 91 would. Or simpler again, get in touch with the guy and find out what the engine number prefix and put it up here. The latter option could save you the trip. ;)

I was hoping somebody could just tell me what arrangement of letters and numbers stamped on the engine I should be looking for.
 

Like if the 4th letter is a J. then it's a such and such motor...

my 1100F engine has V707 prefix.

Take off clutch cover, 1100F has helical clutch gear and coil spring clutch, R has straight gear and diafragm clutch. Or you can pull the clutch lever, linear resistance means coil springs, first heavier and then light resistance means diafragm spring.
