As johnr says, and, when you offer the basket up, and think it's located correctly, put your fingers under it and try to move the oil pump pinion. If the basket's located properly you won't be able to move the pinion more than a tooths click.

What an arse that was , didn't see this post until after I'd done it . Was that pissed off after i put it back together just locked the shed up . Will have to check operation when get home later

Check that the two dogs on the oil pump gear behind the basket  are engaging correctly in their slots in the back of the clutch basket. If they're not, the basket will be spaced wrong and the clutch won't disengage.

Thanks for that I'll have a look tomorrow

New mounting points, with larger diameter to fill the 25mm hole and option to connect both points. Mind you, this will need modification of the inner fender. But mine was damaged anyway, so no broken heart here

    That's the kiddie (y)

  5. When pops did the gs frames he cut and bent the back y of the frame that goes to the original shock mounts and made new ones , he also moved the bottom mount forward on the swingarm, not to lay the shocks down but to shorten the shock travel in relation to the back wheel movement. Think early moto cross before a linkage was added. Don't have any pictures though . It was all done roughly but obviously structurally

For starters I wouldn't fancy it straight through the frame tubes like that, too much leverage on the stubs.

You can get inserts to replace the originals, and in the original position they're as good as you'll get. Basically they're just a stepped solid bar for each side which you weld in. The shock eye slips over the smaller dia on the stub and there's a threaded hole which you put a bolt into.

I've got a mate that can do the machining but how big would the tapped bit be ? Without going and measuring I'm  guessing the bushed section is only 12mm . Have you a link to said stepped bushings ? To everyone else ,thanks for input and the hole did have extra bracing to it , it was the removal of the top rubber bush that was bothering me

  7. Going back to twin shocks on me gsx and bloke at Newark was kind enough to show me photos of how he did shock mounts , looks like the rubber bushing in the top mount has been sacrificed to get desired wall thickness. What's my best option ? This or original ish with nut on the end 20240107_141725.thumb.jpg.b2d8566a6daf778a500cbf9969b2114a.jpg

  8. Well after being welcomed by the masses ,despite disgracing myself at Stafford . All i can add is, stick your bike in the back of a van or ride it , you're assured of a good welcome , new friends and a cracking weekend

    Hi Folks

Hope everyone is doing well.  I’ve been slowly working on my gs1000 every so often and a couple of weeks ago I decided to install some headers, an exhaust and some k&n air filters.

I went up on the pilot jet to a 17.5 and 130 main jet. Bike idles good and starts good. 3/4 throttle and up is also good. Issue I’m having is when I’m cruising from 1/4-3/4 throttle the bike seems to hesitate and bog quite a bit. Air screw is out 2 turns and fuel screw is out 2 1/4 turns.

Needle clip is in its stock position. Would adjusting the needle clip be the solution?

What do you folks think it may be?

    All the best!!

You need an air corrector kit which comes with a tap and reduced air jet, goes into one of the small holes at the back of the carb mouth . Grumpy 1260 does them i believe . Alternatively try taping up a portion of the filters and by trial and error get it to pull cleanly

  10. Well a minutes silence for a dead thread , chucked in some new plugs , backed the accelerator thingy off and was just putting the tank on and noticed a hose going to nowhere in-between 3 and 4 . Yup a  open vacuum hose ! Wrong side so you wouldn't expect it . Fuck fuck fuckety fuck , surprised it ran as well as it did , glad it didn't grenade its self
