Fin170703 Posted March 22, 2017 Posted March 22, 2017 Sadly it seems ive bought a bit of a lemon and the gearbox on my 87 gsx550e is snookered !!!! Second hand engines look to be slim pickings but are there any other models whos engines would slot right in place ? Ive noticed 2 engines for sale on the bay of E but i think theyre from 85 models, anyone have any experience with compatability of these engines from year to year ? Quote
Jonboy Posted March 22, 2017 Posted March 22, 2017 Maybe a 600 bandit would be a relatively easy conversion but you would need electrics and carbs and a pipe too 1 Quote
Fin170703 Posted March 22, 2017 Author Posted March 22, 2017 That was my initial thoughts but i coukdnt really find much info on the net !! Quote
Fin170703 Posted March 22, 2017 Author Posted March 22, 2017 Long shot but does anyone know if this would be the same engine ? Quote
Jonboy Posted March 23, 2017 Posted March 23, 2017 You would have to check the engine number to see if it is within the same model designation as your original unit. Maybe have to do some internet trawling to find that, Engine number maybe starts GN02? If the engine number series is the same then apart from subtle electrical differences they should be the same. But the last thing you want to end up with is an expensive doorstop........Maybe think about original airbox too if there is still room to fit. I remeber the carbs on these being complete twa*ts Quote

Under hard acceleration it slips, similar to dipping the clutch to wheelie etc. Mechanic tokd me it just wouldnt be cost effective to strip and rebuild. Looks liek ill have to spend an evening looking into transplants. Im not really bothered about performance so i direct swap would be preferable Quote

Fin170703 Posted March 24, 2017 Author Posted March 24, 2017 It seems that the Gs engine could well be the same as the GSX 83-87 engine (both engine code N702) Quote
Jonboy Posted March 24, 2017 Posted March 24, 2017 Might be worth just popping out your clutch to see if anything wrong in there before you comit to a whole engine........ Quote
Fin170703 Posted March 24, 2017 Author Posted March 24, 2017 Yeah i think ill have quick gander mate If i can cofirm the gs engine is the same, i do have a few options available to me Quote
Poldark Posted March 25, 2017 Posted March 25, 2017 Sounds more like clutch issue than gearing. Can some of our more experienced members weigh in? 1 Quote
Fin170703 Posted March 25, 2017 Author Posted March 25, 2017 Ive had a stroke of luck and found a decent engine fairly close to me for a 100, so im going to buy it as itll come in handy for buts on sure Its an 85 bike... does anyone know if there was any obvious differences betwenn the 85 and 87 550 engine ? teltwosheds Posted March 29, 2017 Posted March 29, 2017 Yeh. About 2 years................I'll get me coat . seriously I doubt there's any significant difference between the bottom ends. 2 Quote
Fin170703 Posted March 29, 2017 Author Posted March 29, 2017 Swapped the engine over, and the 85 seemed exactly the same... turns over great but cannot get the tw&t to start !!! Chucked it at my mechanic now so im hoping he can fire her up Quote
Jonboy Posted March 30, 2017 Posted March 30, 2017 Did you check for spark? also was it just an engine or did you get carbs as well, seem to recall you having issue with carburettion! Quote
