Baz1954 Posted January 11 Posted January 11 6th January 2024 to 10th January 2025. I was having trouble cleaning rust etc... out of my tank which had been sitting sitting since sometime in 1985. I saw a Youtube clip where a bloke cut it around the seam, cleaned it and tig welded it back together. I'll do that I thought, cut it around the seam had it blasted clean. Beautiful I thought the got a quote of $1400.00 for welding. Oh dear, was a bit strapped at the time when a guy at my club said he would do it. He is a welding instructor for government courses over here. The above dates are the period he had it and during all that time he would tell me " yeah, got it tacked...going good... been a bit busy with work...cracking on with it" and on and on. My wife picked it up for me as he lives near where she works. Good thing as I might have decked him and I don't want to lose my guns. This is what I got. Quote
Reinhoud Posted January 11 Posted January 11 Electrolisys is the best way to get rust out of a tank, it's slow, but works really well Quote
Baz1954 Posted January 11 Author Posted January 11 Tried electrolysis, chemical warfare, nuts, bolts etc...rattling around, couldn't get it to where I was happy. Thanks. Quote
Dezza Posted January 11 Posted January 11 Where are you? It shouldn't be too much hassle finding someone to weld the seams of a sound steel tank and not make a hash of it. If it was made out of ultra-thin alloy though then it'd be a different story. Quote
PeterKaa Posted January 12 Posted January 12 Good news, it isn't botched completely, he stopped in time and didn't warp everything too bad - it can be salvaged, but it takes a skilled welder for sure. Those guys are expensive, but usually pretty nice fellows. Quote
