LLD Posted October 22, 2023 Posted October 22, 2023 What is the best way to remove cilinder studs of a GSX1100 ? Are there any handy tools ? I tried heat and two nuts but that did work well, they keep slipping or getting destroyed. Need to get them out for boring the crankcase and swapping for EFE ones Quote
Swiss Toni Posted October 22, 2023 Posted October 22, 2023 Just keep on with the heat. If you’re trashing the studs, get a grip on the stud as low as you possibly can. Heat/cool is the answer. Two nuts will just twist and snap the stud. Patience! 1 Quote

bitzz Posted October 23, 2023 Posted October 23, 2023 Replacing the headbolts on your 40 year old bike, that is known for head leaks, is probably a good idea Weld nuts on and spin them out. Make new ones from 10mm drill rod. Can you still buy aftermarket head bolts for these bikes? It used to be a popular "upgrade". Quote
LLD Posted October 23, 2023 Author Posted October 23, 2023 Thanks for the feedback I managed to get them out. LOTS of heat was the answer. It requires some serious heating but then it was actually not too bad Funny enough it was the small M6 studs which required a pipe wrench and will need to be replaced Quote

Yes, agreed The studs were quite damaged from the pipe wrench, but in my case I had no intention to reuse them, and all other methods of trying to get them out had failed, it was a last resort 1 Quote
Swiss Toni Posted October 23, 2023 Posted October 23, 2023 I forgot to add … An old trick for seized threads, was to apply plenty heat and, before anything else, apply a small candle to the thread of the stud/bolt/nut. The capillary action sucks the paraffin wax into the threads and, nine times outta ten, frees off the recalcitrant object. Robert’s your Mothers Brother! Seemples! 1 Quote
