del649 Posted April 13, 2023 Posted April 13, 2023 Hi, hoping someone can give me some guidance, I have taken the head of the engine as it was leaking, (not the two front bolt seals) when I removed it the gasket appeared to have eight seals in the outer studs and one around the camchain tunnel. The new one i have has none and no such seals in the gasket set. Is it supposed to have them or has someone added them in. Thanks in advance Quote
wraith Posted April 13, 2023 Posted April 13, 2023 Not done a gsx engine for years but if I remember, yes should have the o ring seals on out side studs and a seal around the cam chain tunnel. Someone will be along who can say for definitely. Quote
imago Posted April 13, 2023 Posted April 13, 2023 Yes, or no. It depends on who's gasket it is, OE did/do. Cometic copper don't, nor do Wiseco laminate. I can't remember if Athena is a laminate which doesn't. Do you know what make of gasket you have? Quote
del649 Posted April 13, 2023 Author Posted April 13, 2023 Its laminated the same as the one I've removed just no seals Quote

del649 Posted April 13, 2023 Author Posted April 13, 2023 I'll get a picture of both tomorrow and post them thanks 1 Quote
imago Posted April 13, 2023 Posted April 13, 2023 It might offer a clue. The Cometic gasket below is a laminate gasket but they don't have 'O' rings at the studs because the laminate material is very soft and seals when it squashes under torquing. Other makes, the original for example, are quite a hard already compressed laminate and they need the 'O' rings as the gasket itself squashes very little. Quote
del649 Posted April 13, 2023 Author Posted April 13, 2023 This is the new gasket, I dont have a picture of the old one as yet, this one consists of 5 laminated sheets with no o rings Quote
imago Posted April 13, 2023 Posted April 13, 2023 That looks like a Wiseco 'copy', (see below) it's a loose laminate type that crushes when torqued down. The four rivets keep the sheets aligned until it's under compression. The other more conventional laminate types don't have the rivets as the sheets are glued together like plywood. Personally, I'd fit that as is, torque it up and good to go. Quote
del649 Posted April 14, 2023 Author Posted April 14, 2023 This is the original gasket that was fitted showing the seals Quote
