Ted M Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 Hi All, I would like your opinion please. I am rebuilding my Bandit 1200 engine. It has done 80000 miles and 5th gear went tits up. I have got the bits to sort this, my problem/query is do I do the big ends and main bearings whilst the engine is in bits as a precautionary measure. There were no knocks rumbles or strange noises prior to the strip. I have had a look at the main bearings and there is very little in the way of marks just some shiny wear patches, the journals look fine too. Quote
fatblokeonbandit Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 leave it well alone, the shells for mains and big ends cost hundreds, i did one years ago and it would have been cheaper to buy a second hand motor. 1 Quote
Ted M Posted November 4, 2015 Author Posted November 4, 2015 That is my school of thought but, it's that nagging doubt. Quote
fatblokeonbandit Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 if the 5th gear hadnt needed replacing would you have worried about the bearings??? Quote
Ted M Posted November 4, 2015 Author Posted November 4, 2015 Thank you kind sir your logic has won the day. I'll use the cash for a 1216 kit :-) Quote
fatblokeonbandit Posted November 4, 2015 Posted November 4, 2015 Just had a quick look, just the shells and thrust bearing cost £250 plus VAT plus postage.. that will buy you a few pies Quote
Captain Chaos Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 I'll use the cash for a 1216 kit :-)then you will need new crankshaft bearings. 1 Quote
Ted M Posted November 5, 2015 Author Posted November 5, 2015 Looks like I'm giving up pies and cakes then Quote
Captain Chaos Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 I was joking. If the bearings are fine, they will still be fine with a 1216cc kit (if you reassemble the engine correctly of course). Quote
Captain Chaos Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 Pies are always good. Almost as good as more cubes. Quote
Ted M Posted November 5, 2015 Author Posted November 5, 2015 Phew that's a relief I was planning on checking oil clearances anyway, I guess I'll find out then whether or not I need to invest in new bearings. Always remember a balanced diet is a pie in each hand Quote
suzook12 Posted November 14, 2015 Posted November 14, 2015 I would get some plastigauge and check the clearances before deciding whether or not to replace the shells. Seeing as you're in that deep, what about a lightened balanced crank? Makes engine much more responsive...... And I know where there is one LolSteve 1 Quote
