  1. Using copperslip or similar on cylinder head nuts, what's the general consensus on this?(I use it everywhere on 'normal' applications)

Some say yes as it aids the accurate torquing of nuts, others say no as it makes it less accurate due to over tightening caused through less friction on the threads...

My thoughts are that the torque wrench should work as intended with or without thread lubricant.but dry, stiff threads could cause inaccurate readings,no?....in the past I have always used a dab of oil.

Not that it makes any difference but its for an GSX1100....

  2. I am relatively new on here and haven't had a lot of socialising with OSS in the flesh,as it were, due to work/family commitments and I find it hard to interact sometimes (I lead a sheltered life lol) but take Cadwell for example, the weather wasn't great and my missus fell ill bless her BUT even if I didn't go out on track I would have thoroughly enjoyed myself simply looking at the bikes that turned up.They were all someone's pride and joy yet they were being used as intended.....It was my fourth time of going and love it every time.

I do go to the odd static show locally but only to see if there is anything 'different' about...but then again its about the people too I guess....Could we have some feedback, personal experiences or reviews on past shows/meets perhaps?

  3. Guys,my starter gear has no thrust washers fitted (2 of) as mentioned in the Haynes manual (albeit shown in an ET type engine.)

There is no mention of them being omitted in the back of the manual either.Robinsons parts finder does not show them on their schematic...So,do EFE's have them?..I would have thought so but I wanted to be sure.

    Thanks.Sheep.

  4. Cheers bud...its defo hub play. There is less movement however when the centre nut is torqued up.All the springs are intact in the backplate with almost zero play...i could probably feel no more than .5 mm play when trying to twist the drive gear on the basket,if that makes sense lol....

  5. I did consider the dowel method.....

I'm aware the spring and rivet assembly on the outer drum have been known to go pop with devastating results but can the same be said about the cast alloy basket??.I can live with a little rattle,in fact the better I balanced my carbs, the quieter it became.

  6. I am currently getting deep down into my motor to change the cam chain, checking things as I go and as title says,I have some slight play side to side between the 'star' shaped centre boss and the alloy clutch basket.

Last year i fitted an APE uprated centre nut which helped with the rattle but I cant help thinking the basket needs attention. Are they beyond repair like this or is there anything i can do to 'tighten' it all up.

On a similar note, would you advise me to replace the rivets/springs for uprated items while its out?

    Cheers guys.

  7. I haven't yet purchased any slotted spockets BUT if you guys think that it wouldn't be necessary then I wont. All the bike is for is a solid reliable road bike/general hoon about with possibly a bore increase to 1230cc but that depends on what I find when I slide the barrels off.  (I'm working without a day off at the moment so that wont be till Monday maybe.)

  8. Cheers guys...

Yesterday a did fashion a stop from an old spark plug and threaded bar and it works a treat.

I am not ready to do the timing until the new year as i have yet to get the barrels bored etc but i just want to do my homework first.

I took the head off last night, labelling and bagging everything methodically which was pretty straight forward (cars/twins i am used to but my first multi bike to this extent).

Everything looked normal albeit a little oil wetting #3 piston top.Very little bore ridge evident but may still go bigger!!

I have all the dial gauges, feelers etc..just need a degree wheel.

  9. Guys, does anybody know of a good link/page etc on the step by step job of setting your cam timing using a degree wheel/dial indicator etc...I have had a read through one or two sites but they seem to go into to it way too deeply.Getting the tdc set with a piston stop i am confident in doing, its just the cam timing itself I need to get to grips with.

I am planning on fitting slotted sprockets to maximise my stock cams potential and i want to swot up on it before i do it..(efe engine). Also, all the sites I did see seemed to be USA based and everything was measures in inches,is this the industry norm or is it down to personal preference?
