ciderman Posted May 19, 2018 Posted May 19, 2018 Hi all. Set up an account years ago and forgot about it (ooops) so typical when I'm in trouble I show up like again. I have a 1990 Gixer1100 Slingshot. I blow the motor about two years ago. Lack of funds meant it stayed under a sheet for a while. Before Christmas I knocked across a cheap bandit 12 engine. Few covers missing no pick ups but I had them. Long story short fitted engine and running but it was almost as bad as what I took out - on with the sheets and walked away from it. Last week a buddy rang me to say he was breaking a Bandit 12. Bike was on the button so did a deal for the engine and carbs - also got the loom and cdi. Fitted the motor and carbs, started it and it backfired for a little bit then settled into a nice tickover but it won't rev over 4k rpm and if I try it surges, dies, surges and stops completely. The only initial problem I spotted is the ignition pick up. Both have a single pick up but I never knew the rotors were different. I ran the bike with the Bandit engine/carbs and the Bandit pickup/rotor. As soon as I spotted this I swopped the rotor to the say what now!? one but no change. Is there any way I could have damaged the cdi by running the wrong rotor. The lad I got it from it convinced I need the bandit cdi but I ran the first bandit engine with the say what now!? cdi. Any ideas please Quote
bigpants Posted May 19, 2018 Posted May 19, 2018 I would guess from what you've described that you've got a fuelling issue rather than an electrical one. Hopefully some of the more clued up members will chip in. Quote
Jaydee Posted May 20, 2018 Posted May 20, 2018 Where abouts are you in Ireland are you? I've set up a good few oil cooled bikes if it needs sorting out. I'm in Kildare. Quote
ciderman Posted May 20, 2018 Author Posted May 20, 2018 I'm out in the wilds of north Cork. I've just opened both sets of carbs. The bandit has 102.5 main jet and the say what now!? carbs are 122.5. Going to try swopping over and see how I go Quote
ciderman Posted May 20, 2018 Author Posted May 20, 2018 (edited) One other thing that may be an issue - Slingshot has two petrol feeds from the tank and the bandit only has one. Would this cause it to starve of fuel Edited May 20, 2018 by ciderman Quote
ciderman Posted May 24, 2018 Author Posted May 24, 2018 (edited) Swopped the jets over and still no joy refuses to rev 5k Edited May 24, 2018 by ciderman Quote
ciderman Posted May 24, 2018 Author Posted May 24, 2018 The bike will rev out if I cover the airbox with my hand so I presume I need a bit of jetting work. I got 122.5 mains in atm any idea where I'll get bigger jets Quote
Blubber Posted May 24, 2018 Posted May 24, 2018 Just thinking out loud... Since it does rev with the air cleaner inlet partially covered.... Basically altering the air / fuel ratio. Have you checked the airbox for leaks or even a filter? Because it sounds abit like what I did once... In a hurry I didn't fit the filter and the bike would only rev when I pulled the choke. Quote
ciderman Posted May 25, 2018 Author Posted May 25, 2018 No leaks I've been spraying WD40 around the inlets and I swopped the inlet manifolds even though I could see nothing wrong with but it just ruled another thing out. its a standard filter fitted. Think I gotta go on the hunt for jets Quote
ciderman Posted May 26, 2018 Author Posted May 26, 2018 Sorted refitted the old say what now!? carbs and its running like a mouses heart - cider time methinks lol 1 Quote
