Time_Machine Posted January 25, 2018 Posted January 25, 2018 Has been a while since I last logged in. I have picked up some more older Suzuki's and now have 4 GS-1000 E models (78, 79, 80, 80) and 2 GS-1100 E models (82, 83). I have some definite plans for the first one that is to be rebuilt and could REALLY use some help determining if some of my planned changes will work. Bike/frame for this project will be a 1979 GS-1000 EN. Biggest questions that I have for now --- 1. Install a 1982/1983 GS-1100 16V engine in the 1979 GS-1000 frame. Direct swap? Use of which mounts? 2. Recommended frame mods to the 1979 frame when installing a modified GS-1100 16V engine (roughly 160 hp estimated at the crank)? 3. Install a GSX-R front fork assembly. I ALREADY have a 1980 GS-1000 E that someone has installed GSX-R forks on --- so I can put those on the 1979 frame. I just don't know WHAT GSX-R model these forks came from. Any markings on the forks that will help me to identify? Or just take measurements of the components and then get help? [Need to change fork seals and would like to replace springs.] No great hurry to get this project completed. Bike will be stripped to the bare frame and rebuilt like it was new (but with LOTS of mods!). Quote
Time_Machine Posted January 25, 2018 Author Posted January 25, 2018 Yep. If you look at my history on this site you will find several. The latest acquisition was this 1980 GS-1000 ET (no pics posted of this one until now). It will get torn down and I'll use some the parts for the current project. Quote
Captain Chaos Posted January 25, 2018 Posted January 25, 2018 those look like GSX-R 750 M/N forks to me 1 Quote

I have NEVER had a GSX-R --- so how do I determine what forks they are? Just want to make sure that I buy the correct parts to install in the forks when I rebuild them. Edited January 25, 2018 by Time_Machine Left out the word "correct". Quote
Time_Machine Posted January 25, 2018 Author Posted January 25, 2018 Bike that is getting rebuilt ---- again, a 1979 GS-1000 EN. Has already had some things done, but I found metallic shavings/slivers in the engine oil and have decided to just go ahead and tear the bike completely down. I figure that since it is a 1979 model (and I have other GS-1000 bikes) I can just do whatever the hell I want on this one. Bought it and brought it home in March 2017 --- Quote
Captain Chaos Posted January 25, 2018 Posted January 25, 2018 GSX-R 750 from '91 and '92. In America anyway, because the rest of the world got upside down forks on the '90 (L) model already. To be really sure post some close up pics of the front forks and someone else will confirm (or not). They should be 41mm stanchions, and where the triple trees clamp them the diameters should be 50 and 54mm. Lovely GS1000 you got there. Should never have sold mine 20 years ago. Jonboy Posted January 26, 2018 Posted January 26, 2018 16V donkey in a 78GS1000 chassis, had to use 16v mounting plates, engine mount under generator on L/H sifde of engine needs cutting off frame and new one to suit 16v engine sorting. Beware of fuel tap vs carbs..... Quote
Time_Machine Posted January 26, 2018 Author Posted January 26, 2018 Thanks. Appreciate the good info coming in. Quote

Beware of fuel tap vs carbs..... So.... fabrication needed for the engine mount on the lower left (under the gen cover) and using the 16V motor mount plates and it fits in there nicely, correct? That doesn't sound too bad. Looks like you have a 79-80 GS1000 fuel tank on that bike? I am planning on using a 1980-1981 GS1100 fuel tank and a new set of Mikuni RS 38mm carbs. Fuel tap placement on that tank might be slightly different --- will check that out. Quote
Jonboy Posted January 31, 2018 Posted January 31, 2018 When you say GS1100, do you mean 16valve GSX tank? if so then you will probably be OK although with 38RSs you will certainly need a Pingel tap to feed them. Quote

Yes. This tank --- from a 1980-1981 GS1100E 16V engine bike. Quote
Jonboy Posted February 1, 2018 Posted February 1, 2018 If i remember rightly fuel tap position quite near back of tank and causes no clearance issue Quote
Simbec1863 Posted February 1, 2018 Posted February 1, 2018 (edited) Fuel tap location just above filter on my 7/11 GSX1100 tank think the tap is the EX model not ET but may be wrong picture in post below Edited February 1, 2018 by Simbec1863 Quote
Time_Machine Posted February 1, 2018 Author Posted February 1, 2018 Thanks again! Just need to decide if I really want to put the 1100 engine into the 1000 frame. Actually, the are still LOTS of decisions to be made on what to do with this bike. Quote
