Bandit graphite exhaust gasket

Im now on my 3rd gasket. can someone please advise the right way to fit these bastards ?

It would appear the flanged end of the link pipe fits into the exhaust collector ( aftermarket ) but the gasket seems too small to go over the flanged end and just splits open.  The gasket is also tight into the collector. 

Is there a trick to fitting these ???

Apparently the mesh one is a lot easier to fit.
