Dukeman Posted July 9, 2020 Posted July 9, 2020 86 - GSXR1100 Cam chain tensioner spring replacement ... Just pull it out? Planning to replace the cam chain spring while the carbs are off....... any tips? Can I just undo the cap screws and pull it out? Or undo the nut first and remove the internals leaving the housing? I do want to put a new gasket under the housing. Any ideas? Quote
fatblokeonbandit Posted July 9, 2020 Posted July 9, 2020 undo the nut and the spring will come out, why are you replacing it, is it out of tolerance..??? Quote
Dukeman Posted July 9, 2020 Author Posted July 9, 2020 My guess is its 34yrs old, i have access and its not expensive. So made sense to me. Quote
fatblokeonbandit Posted July 9, 2020 Posted July 9, 2020 Just measure the free length of the spring and see if it needs a new one Quote
Dukeman Posted July 10, 2020 Author Posted July 10, 2020 Pulled the bolt and spring out, followed by the tensioner housing. The spring is quite a bit shorter, and the manual does not give the correct length, the manual say no spec is supplied by Suzuki. Reset the push-rod and checked the ratchet which was fine, push rod needed to be pushed back when installing. New gasket, the old gasket had fallen apart and the cap screws were just nipped up, to loose. All back together now. 1 Quote
Oilyspanner Posted July 10, 2020 Posted July 10, 2020 Glad you did the install right ie. fit the retracted mechanism first and then fit the spring and bolt last - else the plunger can over extend whilst fitting it, once too tight that's it, it can't go back ! I changed my spring 2 or 3 years ago too, it was shorter as well - the spring costs very little, so good thing to do. Quote
