Thanks to all the help from this forum I have been able to get my barn find 1981 GS550L to a,,, running-ish state. Issue is I just can't seem to keep it running under 2k RPM. Here it is running feels stable and could run forever. I turned the idle down under 2k. It just continues to lower and lower until it just dies. For video of above see link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1vF2FYEu3S3Nwbkj5zmFM20TLjRv-mVBY/view?usp=sharing I am not sure that it matters but before the above I noticed that cylinder 3,4 was kind of cold 70F so I leaned out the mix and they are now up to 130-140F. So now the four temps seems to stabilize at: 1 = 135 2 = 205 3 = 130 4 = 140 Not sure if this is correct, but it did start to run better. Not sure I am doing the right thing, or if it is even related, but seemed to be a good idea. Any ideas I would love to hear them.

I was continuing to work on my clutch but I noticed that there is an oil leak coming from the Clutch Push Rod and Oil Seal (Blue Arrow). The clutch push rod looks worn and even has a scratch in it. I found that I could stop the leak by pulling the rod out past the wear spot. So it seems that I need a replacement. However no one seems to have a replacement. OEMs have the seal (22) but not the metal push rod (21). Am I missing something. Is a rod and rod and I just need to find the correct dia and length? or am I just going to have to play the waiting game for something to show up on Eblag.

Hi everyone. I have been working on getting my barn find 1981 GS550L running. I picked it up for $100 and it has been a fun learning experience. From solving the legal tittle issues, to cleaning out mouse droppings and bedding from,,, well everything. I made a big step forward last week (Well big to me). It fired! After cleaning and replacing the dead CDI with a EDI, it sparked and after some starter fuel bingo bongo it roared to life. I am stoked! Until then I was really wondering if I had a paper weight. But now I have questions. As I am starting to rebuild the carbs my mind floated to the engine oil. 35 years in a barn, that oil has to be more sludge then oil. My question is what should I do? Is there a recommended process, product or deity to pray to? Thank you everyone. Have an awesome day!

I'm replacing steering neck bearings on a 1981 GS550L frame. These are tapered roller bearings. Top bearing outer race came right out of the frame using a long punch and hammer. On the lower bearing, I can't get a firm strike with the punch. I'm sure I am not the first here to attempt this. Is there a special tool or technique? My repair manual doesn't say anything about it.

Hi. I am trying to set the timing /camshaft timing marks. I have set the timing mark to the 'T' mark, however I can't get the exhaust mark @ 2 to be vertical. It's leaning slightly left. Is getting the 20 links pins between exhaust 2 and inlet 3 mark more important than the arrow being vertical? Sorry it's a bit of a weird question, but I assume having this out of sync will end up with bent valves and hard to set TIA Andy

I've got a GS550 that won't rev. I've cleaned the carbs out, replaced the coils, new battery, new stator and rectifier but it just won't rev cleanly, it starts to rev then 'chokes'. It's electronic ignition so no dizzy. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks Steve
