  1. Finally made it to road testing. But have noticed that when I give it gas the engine responds, but it doesn't really translate to speed. It speeds up but kind of slowly. We are talking like 2nd 3rd gear here, nothing to crazy or near top speed. Engine is also reving to like 4-5k rpms for like 40mph. I feels like the clutch might be slipping. So I was wondering if that feeling combined with very little clutch lever friction zone could I need new clutch plates?
  2. Thanks to the help of may here and my lucky fumblings I have been able to get my 1981 GS550L running. While working on solving an electrical issue I notice some liquid dripping from the left muffler (White Circle). This liquid seems to be dripping from a bolt/insert/,,,,something (Red Arrow). Sitting still the liquid looks to be building up on this item (Green Arrow) before falling to the floor. Thinking this could be oil coming from the engine somewhere, I climbed under while running I can see the liquid sometime spraying directly from the exhaust out of the bolt thing (Red Arrow). This liquid seems to only be coming mainly from the left side. I think I have seen a few drops on the right side, but it is like a 99/1 ratio. I gave the liquid the finger rub test and maybe kind of oily but I would call is more water like. Also it doesn't smell like gas or burn oil. Also not getting a thick black exhaust that would make ma think super rich mixture or burning out. So I am a bit lost. Could it be water? If so where could it be coming from? If oil is there a way to enter the exhaust without burning?
  3. I have been rebuilding a 1981 barn find that sat for 35 years. It have been fun, but I am struggling with the Clutch. The clutch was extremely hard to pull. By extremely hard I mean nearly impossible. So I disassembled both the clutch basket side and the sprocket side. Cleaned the clutch plated with alcohol and paper towel and then re-oiled them. After reassembly and tonguing the clutch bolts to 8 ft/lbs the clutch is better, but the lever still requires a large amount of force to pull it. While I had everything apart I check the clutch cable. It was easy to pull and smooth. I check the clutch screw and it was rotating smoothly. Finely I tried removing 3 of the 6 springs and it felt "Right" Easy to pull and smooth. But leaving 3 springs out seems like a bad idea. Lastly the clutch doesn't seem to be fully disengaging when I pull it. If anyone has any ideas on what is going on or adjustments I can try please let me know. Thanks
  4. I have a 1981 Suzuki GS550L. The clutch seems to not be working/moving. In my research and prep work I am looking for replacement parts, but I have found a part on the schematic that I am unable to find a name or part number for (Green Arrow). I may or may not need this part, and it might just need a good cleaning, but would be great to know the name and number for this item to be ready to replace it if needed. So I turn to you awesome people and hope someone knows what it is.
  5. Hi everyone. I have been working on getting my barn find 1981 GS550L running. I picked it up for $100 and it has been a fun learning experience. From solving the legal tittle issues, to cleaning out mouse droppings and bedding from,,, well everything. I made a big step forward last week (Well big to me). It fired! After cleaning and replacing the dead CDI with a EDI, it sparked and after some starter fuel bingo bongo it roared to life. I am stoked! Until then I was really wondering if I had a paper weight. But now I have questions. As I am starting to rebuild the carbs my mind floated to the engine oil. 35 years in a barn, that oil has to be more sludge then oil. My question is what should I do? Is there a recommended process, product or deity to pray to? Thank you everyone. Have an awesome day!
