  1. Thanks all. Really helpful. The previous owner made a bit of a mess of it all, so I am replacing and redoing everything as i go. I've only had chance for a quick look on Eblag and it seems like a choice between a cheap kit, or a second hand Yamaha or equivalent, but if I get a second hand decent one I'll need to sort the plugs etc. Stator looks brand new, but who knows. It came with two reg/recs in a box of bits that both look wrecked, so I had planned to get a new one anyway. I have some time to look at this next week. I never look forward to electrics, but at least I know now I can sort this without coughing up for some fancy part that costs about a third of what I paid for the bike. Thanks Again Liam
  2. I'm building a bike with my teenage son (modified 1980 GS250T) - he's done a good job and it's almost there, but I can't avoid doing the wiring any longer. We want to use a lithium battery because i's so small and easy to hide away. I've been reading up on the wiring and various places online say I'll need a special regulator rectifier for a lithium battery, but I can't find anyone saying this other than the people who are selling the things... and they're about £150 ish. Does anyone know if I need one or not? Is there a cheaper (and still safe) way of doing it? If it makes any difference I'm also trying out using a motogadget m-unit I got in a deal... thanks in advance Liam
  3. Thanks both. I've not had a chance to get onto it yet. I have buttons a bit like the ones you mention John. I have to dismantle whatever was done around the mini clock thing and the warning lights first, but after that I think I have a plan now. Another advantage is that the motogadget gets rid of a few of the relays etc...which is good when you don't have any handy. Thanks again. Liam
  4. Agreed - it was certainly easier doing my Katana which I cleaned, installed and checked in a couple of hours from memory...but I don't have a loom with this one unfortunately so I'm going to 'happily' embrace the struggle and try to learn some stuff along the way.
  5. Thanks - I stayed pretty much standard with my Katana; I had a good loom to start which made it easier. I doesn't look flash, but it works. I need to get better at wiring though, so I am going to persevere with this motogadget - this and the cheaper alternatives like the X21 must make things neater and easier in the long run??
  6. Thanks John, I have been looking at the loom that 'Revival cycles' and thought I'd got it. Your solution seems simpler though...I'll get my small brain around that now. If I fail, I'll be back! Thanks again.
  7. after posting, just found this: Problem is, I'd rather use buttons (which I have momentary and switch versions of) rather than original switchgear (which I don't). Any help from those of you who are better in the dark arts of electrics much appreciated.   8. Apologies if this has been covered before, but I can't find it. I am rebuilding an 'abandoned project' 1980 gsx250 twin with my son. Lots of work but a good challenge sorting out other people's mods. It came with a motogadget basic unit which I'd like to use as it also has a bespoke billet yoke to house a motogadget mini. I'm not an electrics fan but I can follow a wiring diagram pretty well - problem is, I can't find a diagram that includes the CDI box. Has anyone done this, or have access to a wiring diagram? thanks in advance, and Merry Christmas/ Happy New year.

    Thanks. I've got some carbs now, but exhausts are a bit rarer. I've found a perfect parts bike with one on though - just need to work out how to get it here as I am working all week. Nobody driving a van from Essex to Hampshire soon...?

  11. I'm building a 1980 GSX250 E (I think) with my son. I need to get some carbs. I think the originals were twin mikuni bs30, and there's a couple of old sets on evilbay, but before I buy some.... Its going to be modified so there's no need to stay standard: is there a good upgrade to go for? ... that are cheap? thanks Liam ps - if anyone has a spare set, and an exhaust going cheap, please let me know.
  12. Yep, there are in fact 2 locking nuts - neither of which I retightened properly after adjusting it!

Right, errr, embarrassing admission: Went through everything and finally noticed that the gear selector rod had 'unscrewed' itself so that the joint butted up against the bottom of the footrest when I tried to change down. I obviously hadn't tightened it properly when I was setting it. Tightened it up, adjusted the clutch cable and it now changes fine. I rode it to Loomies and back tonight. Thanks again for all the advice and apologies for taking up your time. At least I know I have double checked everything now. yours embarrassed...
  14. Thanks everyone. Lots of good ideas of where to start. Sadly it does feel like it might be internal, but I'll definitely try all this first. ...and apologies if my terms are confusing. What very little I know was self taught, and most parts are 'thingies' or 'doodads'.

  16. Thanks for your reply, No, I can't change gear with the engine off. The gear shaft won't rotate either way when I use the lever.
  17. After finally getting my katana on the road it was riding, handling and running beautifully, until I couldn't change gear. I was within a mile of my house so nursed it home in first. The clutch disengages with the lever as usual, so I can wheel it around, but I can't change it out of gear. I'm hoping that someone will point out something really stupid that I might have done, or that I should check. I had the engine out during the build, but didn't go into the gearbox. Any suggestions would be very gratefully received....I'm not sure I can face stripping it all down. thanks in advance. Liam ps gsx750sz engine with about 10000miles. Wiseco 816 kit. standard carbs jetted. Anything else you need to know? pps - this is under resin corse kat in projects. Before anyone asks, I was about to start prepping the bodywork on the day the gearbox 'went'.
  18. Brilliant thank you. I spent ages googling late last night and sort of worked that out. But having it confirmed is superb and now I know I definitely have 2 sets of Mk1, I can confidently decide what to do next.
  19. Sorry to drag this up. Is there an easy way of checking/seeing whether Bandit forks are mk1 or mk2 without taking them off or putting them on the bike? Thanks Liam

  21. I have one of those Chinese led flasher relays and it didn't work before. Rather than waste more time faffing around though, I'm going to wait until I have the side light fitted and try again.
  22. Tried all sorts. Eventually tried a different type of LED lights I found in the garage. The indicators still become slightly dimmer, but they do work ok. So it's as if the battery was really weak or something (which it isn't). Anyway, problem solved ish. Thanks all
  23. Thanks all. I'll have a go later on, using the originals first, then double-checking everything else. I expect I've done something dense.
