  1. get a box section ally swingarm from the katana, 1100et, 1100ez, etc, and it will fit straight into your frame with no mods whatsoever, same shocks, same spindle, same brake caliper mount, looks cool, just in an oldskool way.

  2. you dont need to swap the swingarm. you can get a 160 or a 180 in the stock swingarm. altrnatively, you can buy weld on ally lugs for welding to the swingarm of your choice to allow you to keep it twin shock. i fitted zzr kawaski wheels to my kat with the stock swingarm and a 180 tyre on the back and had no clearance issues.

has your et got a steel or an alloy swingarm?

  3. went to stafford at the weekend, boy am i out of touch with prices! shit a brick, there wasnt a thing worth having for under 2k, sr yam 500 for 7.5k, vincent single, 20k, 750 bsa twin, 13.5k, lc yams for 5k, at last i spotted a gs1000s with yoshi paintwork, red and white tank and fairing were nice and freshly painted, but engine was a unknown quantity, it wasnt a runner, had no wiring clocks or carbs, it had yam running gear and brakes, but was missing a lot of gs's specific stuff. it also had no reg number or v5 so would need registration. but it was still up for £1.5k, and it wasnt the only comedically priced bike there, a kat 1100 in very very good nick was priced at £8.5k, and a lot of very ordinary bikes were carrying extraordinary pricetags. i know asking and getting are two very different things, but i hadnt expected the prices of non running bitsa projects to have shot up so much in the 2 years ive not been to stafford.

  4. how much detail do you want? steve at luckyseven is in the process of making these frame brace kits like fitted to this frame and selling them on to owners, you just need to weld them to your frame. might be worth contacting him before you start.

  5. what actually happens is that people oil cables that have ptfe liners and arent supposed to be lubed, the oil on the cable gets dust stuck to it and the repeated use of it slowly drags the dirt down into the liner, this oil and dirt mix becomes a sort of grinding paste and slowly erodes the liner on the cable and the resulting gloop of oil dirt and abraded plastic siezed up the operation of the cable. folks have always said that the oil makes the plastic swell, but it doesnt, its much more simple than that.

  6. i have to add my two pennorth for what its worth, stock plates are as good as they come, but i once did a guy a favour and he gave me a set of new barnett kevlar plates for my kat in return. by a considerable margin they were the best clutch plates ive ever experienced, they just hook up and fire you forwards, no slip, no grabbing, no woolyness, as soon as they bite, youre launched forwards, and no ammount of abuse would make them play up. id have anpother set, but im not sure id spend what it costs to buy them.

  7. look on Eblag for a firm called 'mitzibits' they break mitsubishi shogun 4x4's. the shogun clocks needles are identical to the katanas, and cos theyre inside the car and protected from uv light, they retain their colour and are still bright orange, same fitting, same length etc. ive bought sets from him before now for a fiver a pair but he has got wise to demand and upped his prices, but you should still score a set for a tenner or so. alternatively the old hodna lardwing clocks have identical needles to the kat except they are white not orange, i did pete camis clocks with wing needles, good match for stock. but you need to be uber uber careful removing the old needles, theyre mounted on a super delicate spindle that can and frequently does snap off if disturbed. pm me through the club and i will go through how to change them, ive done a couple of sets.

  8. ok, how about a bit of a compromise, the katana 400 has the same style snowflake pattern wheels as the rest of the gs and gsx range, but the little import 400 kat has a wider 18 inch front that you can get wider tyres for than the old 19s, and the rear 17 inch is wide enough to take a 160 or perhaps larger, but they still look like the stock snowflake pattern ones.
