Limitations on turbo placement or orientation?

Recommended Posts

I am considering my options and don’t know if there are any limitations or concerns with running a turbo in an orientation other than with the turbine parallel to the ground. Lubrication, bearing thrust surface, or lack of it. I know the turbine itself weighs next to nothing, but at the rpm they run at, any deviation is a consideration.

Should I be concerned running at an angle, or even vertical?

Its not something much discussed as most installs are horizontal or upto 10 degrees off. Turbo bearings both plain and BB are designed for radial loads with a small passive axial pressure bearing to keep the wheels away from the scroll  surfaces. This position also assists with natural drainage of oil out of the core. Shifting it vertical will remove all the radial load and transfer it axially needing a proper hi-speed thrust bearing and a way of preventing the oil pooling / pissing through the bearing and smoking like a tractor during start and general running - in all, a bad idea!

And that’s why I ask. It couldn’t be coincidence I couldn’t find an example otherwise. Thanks!

Kind if sucks not to be able to take advantage of clocking on more than one plane. Would have made for a tidy package.
