oh...one other thing , if oil is escaping out,could it not escape into the piston barrels causing smoke ?  as there is quite abit of oil in that area .

Getting oil past the fire rings & into cylinders is poor gasket prep or it's failed! If 3rd time I'd suspect non flat head or block!
