brian darrien Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 Bought a izumi es532 drive chain for my gsx1100f , fits great , but master link is a solid end pins , iv got the pressure plate on but no chance of spreading the ends of the links, non clip type , any advice on how too spread the ends of the pins would be appreciated, I read somewhere that just pressing on the pressure plate is enough, surely not Quote
KATANAMANGLER Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 (edited) Buy a chain revering tool. They have a ball bearing tip that upsets the end of the rivet without the risk of over tightening the plates. You can pick a cheap one for shitpence. My preference is a decent one but even if the cheap one last for a couple chains it's better than messing about with a hammer and punch and damaging the plates. Better still borrow one. brian darrien Posted November 28, 2015 Author Posted November 28, 2015 Tried the rivet tool with the ballbearing end, but those are for the pins with a hollow tip, it didnt even make a dent on it , I could bench punch the rivet on a vice , but then I would have too drop the wheel and the swinging arm too get it back on , Quote
KATANAMANGLER Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 I have done it in place with a mate holding steel block behind the chain and me wheildind a domed punch with well timed precision strikes. Quote
brian darrien Posted November 28, 2015 Author Posted November 28, 2015 Thatscwhat im going too try katanamangler, can I ask did the punch cover the whole pin or was it slightly smaller diameter Quote
Gixer1460 Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 A sharp hardened centre punch should be enough to flare out the pin sufficiently - deffo a 4 handed operation though. Quote
KATANAMANGLER Posted November 28, 2015 Posted November 28, 2015 I spread it with a rounded (blunt) centre punch stuck in the centre of the pin. Then I used a wider flat point to create some flats round the outside. 1 Quote
