  1. I have been rebuilding a 1981 barn find that sat for 35 years. It have been fun, but I am struggling with the Clutch. The clutch was extremely hard to pull. By extremely hard I mean nearly impossible. So I disassembled both the clutch basket side and the sprocket side. Cleaned the clutch plated with alcohol and paper towel and then re-oiled them. After reassembly and tonguing the clutch bolts to 8 ft/lbs the clutch is better, but the lever still requires a large amount of force to pull it. While I had everything apart I check the clutch cable. It was easy to pull and smooth. I check the clutch screw and it was rotating smoothly. Finely I tried removing 3 of the 6 springs and it felt "Right" Easy to pull and smooth. But leaving 3 springs out seems like a bad idea. Lastly the clutch doesn't seem to be fully disengaging when I pull it. If anyone has any ideas on what is going on or adjustments I can try please let me know. Thanks
  2. Carbs are fixed. Not sure exactly what fixed it, but pulled them and gave floats 3 and 4 a tweak and the carbs are no longer leaking fuel everywhere. After re loading the carbs and some starter fluid it started and ran like a real motorcycle. After adding a new throttle cable it revs,,,, kind of. There is a bit of delay... And after idling and checking things out I noticed that carb two vacuum piston was rising up when I revved it. So awesome! I think it is getting closer to real bike. However now that it is running I am seeing oil leaking from maybe the oil pressure sensor, or something near there. Oil is pooling and looks to be flooding the starter motor depression. So two steps forward, one step back. As I have also noticed the clutch is not working. Video of it running: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1hE-fsP6NfsOCwj-lc1nS7XcLKJvHv6Gc/view?usp=sharing
  3. I did check to see if they produced spark before putting it back in and it was strong. As for the carb leaking fuel I replaced the float and pin... I am thinking I might have put the float in upside down.
  4. The spark plug looked black. Didn't seem wet. I pulled out the boar scope and things look ok to me. Granted I don't have a ton of experience. I have attached them below. I am thinking of hooking up the vacuum sync gauges and see if there is any vacuum reading from cylinder 2. Not sure if this will help. Any ideas?
  5. I just finished rebuilding the carbs. I think I might have put the float in incorrectly so it might not be shutting correctly. Also for the cylinder 2 not working a friend wondered if the valves are not working correctly... That seems like a rabbit hole to find out if that is true. If that is it what external conditions could/should I see. Like no vacuum? or magic black smoke? Any suggestions? Thanks!
  6. I am so excited! Tonight my barn find 1981 GL550L idled! However a few issues. Carb 3 and 4 leaked fuel out the air inlet. Seems the floats are not stopping the fuel... but not 100% on that so if you have other ideas why that might be happening please let me know. Also cylinder 2 is not firing. It has the holy trinity fuel, air, spark. I checked the compression and it measures in at 110 psi not to spec but it is close to the other working cylinders. I have tried spraying starter fluid into the carb. Nothing. Removed the spark plug strayed it straight into 2. Nothing. I pulled the spark plug and held it to the side of the engine and it was sparking like crazy. So I am unsure what direction to head in. If you have any suggestion please let me know. 7. I have a 1981 Suzuki GS550L. The clutch seems to not be working/moving. In my research and prep work I am looking for replacement parts, but I have found a part on the schematic that I am unable to find a name or part number for (Green Arrow). I may or may not need this part, and it might just need a good cleaning, but would be great to know the name and number for this item to be ready to replace it if needed. So I turn to you awesome people and hope someone knows what it is.
  8. Hi everyone. I have been working on getting my barn find 1981 GS550L running. I picked it up for $100 and it has been a fun learning experience. From solving the legal tittle issues, to cleaning out mouse droppings and bedding from,,, well everything. I made a big step forward last week (Well big to me). It fired! After cleaning and replacing the dead CDI with a EDI, it sparked and after some starter fuel bingo bongo it roared to life. I am stoked! Until then I was really wondering if I had a paper weight. But now I have questions. As I am starting to rebuild the carbs my mind floated to the engine oil. 35 years in a barn, that oil has to be more sludge then oil. My question is what should I do? Is there a recommended process, product or deity to pray to? Thank you everyone. Have an awesome day!
  9. With the help here and some internet friends The bike has fired. I think I have time timing correct but not 100% sure as this is the first time I have ever done this. But for the first time in 35 years it roared to life. It also ejected smoke, mouse stuff out the exhaust. It was odd but it felt like barn find confetti.
  10. I picked up an edi DS3-2 from Eblag Eblag link. All of these on Eblag claim to work like the official. I know they are a knock off, but i am unsure it is correct. I installed it and power it from a 12vdc 10amp power supply. The device seems to be normal collected to ground. But when the magnet passes the sensor it disconnects from ground. This is completely different then I expected watching this YouTube video Link. I am lost and confused. Is this correct? If it is it would seems the ignition coil would be energized all the time except for a small amount of time. To me this seems backwards. Any guidance would be appreciated.
