  1. Hi Gang,

    I've run into a semi-complicated issue regarding my (rear brake caliper hanger / rear wheel shaft) fitment.

    The rear wheel going on the bike is from a 1995 GXSR750 (straight three spokes)

    The rear brake caliper as well as the matching hanger that came with it (that I want to use) is from a 1985 GS1150.

    This brake setup allows the caliper to sit on the top side of the rotor with the torque arm bolting to the top side of the rear swingarm. (which is what I want & need)

    The swingarm I have is your garden variety, lower braced JCM unit, pictured here:

    I want to use this brake setup (I don't have it yet)

    I need to make sure that I use a rear wheel shaft that will fit snugly through this caliper hanger, and my 95 GXSR750 wheel.

    I've already done tons of research on these parts, including comparing their part numbers.

    The problem is, I can't seem to find any data anywhere that gives dimensions.

    The rear brake caliper hanger that I want to use is P/N: 69721-47011

    The 1985 GS1150 rear wheel shaft is P/N: 61211-00A00, and it would absolutely fit the hanger listed above, but I have no idea if it would fit my swingarm, or wheel.

    (you see how this is getting complicated)

     

    The shaft diameter of the bolt that's currently residing in my swingarm is 20mm (0.787”) thick but obviously I don't have a part number for it because it came with the swingarm. My 1995 GSXR750 (three "straight" spoke) wheel fits on the shaft that's currently in the JCM swingarm if that helps.

    I have to make sure that the inner diameter of the 85 GS1150 rear brake caliper hanger will fit the existing (20mm / 0.787") shaft that I have. (before I get it)

    If not, then I need to source one that will not only fit the hanger, but inside the swingarm and wheel as well.

    I've already tried looking these shafts up online for dimensions but you can't accurately gauge thickness from a picture online.

    Also, I'm assuming that the thickness of the current shaft, and the shaft used for an 85 GS1150 would be different, but in reality they could be the same and I just don't know.

    If any of you guys know of a site, or chart, or table that gives dimensions for these items, I'd be supper appreciative.

    If any of you guys know "from experience" what will fit with what, I'd be supper appreciative.

  2. Thanks for all the info guys,

     

    I wound up buying two NOS OEM front brake rotors and a good drill press. ($99.00 each for the NOS rotors)

     

    I watched a bunch of videos on YouTube and I'm pretty confidant that I can just get a template (of which there are dozens of free brake rotor drill templates off of the internet) or I could just make my own pattern, and drill them myself, it doesn't look too difficult at all.

     

    All you have to do is gradually step up in diameter size of the drill bits starting out small, watch your speed, use a good lubricant, take your time, and it should come out just fine.

    I'm looking to replace the original front brake rotors on my 79 GS750E (not because they're too thin)

     

    I had the brake calipers powder black-coated last summer and I figure it would be nice to put some of those pretty drilled (slotted) rotors on to give the bike a more modern, aggressive look

     

    The problem is that I can only seem to find '"floating" rotors  that are 5mm thick:

    I really don't want to replace my healthy 6mm rotors with 5mm rotors if I don't have to, and secondly, I don't even know if you should or could. In other words would 5mm thick rotors be acceptable, would they have the same stopping power, etc. etc. etc.???

     

    I'd love to put these on, but currently there's only one left on E-Bay and apparently the Australian company that makes them doesn't ship to the US:

  4. Hi Gang,

     

    This may seem like a silly question but......can the top triple tree clamp from a 2001 Bandit 1200 be used in place of the top triple tree clamp from a 1993 GSXR750 set of front forks?

     

    I wold imagine that as long as the fork size diameter of these two different bikes are the same that it could, but I don't know the diameter sizes.

     

    I need to be able to use the top triple tree clamp from a Bandit 1200 so that I can easily mount the speedo gauges rather than trying to fabricate something on the existing top triple clamp of my 93 GSXR 750 top triple tree clamp. (not the Bandit 1200 version where the speedo gauges mounted to the front fairing, the version where they actually mounted to the top triple tree clamp)

  5. Hi Gang,

     

    Here's my new dilemma........

     

    I'm stuffing a 89 GSXR1100 Slingshot engine into a 79 GS 750 frame with an upside-down front end & wider rear swing arm from a 93 GSXR750, and I'm using the wiring loom from an 89 GSXR1100.

     

    I want to use the speedometer/tachometer setup from a Suzuki Bandit 1200 but their digital, without the mechanism to use a cable.

    The speedo/tachometer set up for these 89 motors is a cable that drove the speedometer, and an electrical plug for the tachometer, where the Bandits are fully digital without the cable mechanism, and I don't want to use the early Bandit speedometer/tachometer setup that had that goofy gas gauge in the middle.

    Here's my question, is it possible to house a speedometer & tachometer from a stock (see photo below) 89 speedo/tach housing into the housing of a Bandit speedo/tach?

     

    Or, is it possible to somehow covert what I have to "accept" the fully digital Bandit speedometer/tachometer setup?

     

    I absolutely hate the "offset" housings that Suzuki made during the later 80's into the 90's and it won't look right on the bike I'm building.

    The reason why I want to do this is because (for me) the bullet or "cone" shaped speedometer/tachometer housings are the prettiest, and I love that retro look.

    If this can't be done, then do any of you know of a setup (that has that cone shaped, retro look) that would work?

    The old (in the day) was getting some Lockheed calipers that where made for the gs range.

    The only other thing to do is have some mounting plates made for a set of calipers of your choice.

    If you're ok with staying with standard calipers I've put latter gs850 calipers on early gs1000 before strate swop.

    I was thinking the same thing and judging from most of the replies it looks like I won't be able to get away with some simple bolt-on deal where I'm done in 20 minutes or so. It's ok though because all of you guys gave a lot of great suggestions and I'll use everybody's input to put something together.

  10. Hi Gang,

     

    I'll be riding my 79 GS750E this season more than my other bike, and the right front brake caliper has been "slightly" weeping brake fluid on the rotor for the past couple of summers.

     

    I've rebuilt both of the front calipers a while ago and they both have new pistons & seals but the right caliper just won't keep a tight seal (for whatever reason)

    and I'm done messing with it. I may have taken off too much inner diameter material when I cleaned it.....I have no idea.

     

    At any rate, I've been scouring the internet looking for a more modern set of  front calipers that I can just bolt right on without a hassle or any modification work, and I seem to be striking out.

     

    If any of you custom experts out there that may have already done something like this, and knows where to source such a set of calipers (if they exist) could steer me in the right direction, I sure would appreciate it.
