Man, that's a nice bike!!! Love it!
Hit Wemoto.com and select your bike, and order the starter refurbishment kit. Easy as pie. With g11 insulation -
You can go for a Chinese hydraulic clutch kit. Will set you back $20 + some fluid
-
Sweet! Didn't cost you too much either then?

Hi,
Welcome to OSS! Mean looking GS you got there
Electrex stator is a great stator with a fair price. Change the regulator while you at it. You should have a look at Arttu and his testing with series mosfet regualtor, page 3 in this thread:

Welcome! Congratulations with a great bike and an oss- account! Can't go wrong.
Pictures please
Good luck

Didn't state that. Check the starter circuit if there's a serious large current draw at start -up.
Wiring of the alternator is another case. As you mentioned. Straight forward

Hi Gregg,
Have you measured the amps with a clamp? A regular Fluke can be set to detect and freeze peak values. Would be interesting in terms of fault search.
There's two parts that I find interesting in the circuit:
1. Starter motor, is it original, brush wear etc. Could be filled with carbon from brushes causing a short circuit/ground fault. Video
2. starter relay, any type of ground fault etc.
FYI, I had the same problem with my GS1000. Turned out my external battery charger was toasted and didn't fully charge the battery.

I think i'd take that with a large pinch of salt! Other sites / reviews quote a believable 10k redline
Oh yes indeed I just wanted to help finding some more answers. IMO the 5500 rpm sounded a bit of the chart.

If it's hitting a wall at 5500 rpm at neutral, or any other gear, then it sounds like electronics issue. Ignition would be my primary suspect.
According this site you should reach 13 000rpm. And 90 mph.

Forgive me, but I don't know this bike, but in Norway there was different types of power restrictions for different licenses for motorcycles. Could it be manually restricted to achieve a top speed limitor or HP limitor, somehow, back in the 80s?
Just thinking out loud

MAybe at bit late, but I found this site. I think it's a list of calipers you can use:
