Does anyone know if the Dyna ignition for the GS750/1000 and GSX750/1100 would fit on a GS550, are they all the same, or different?
-
Be interested to see how the electrics are arranged under the seat and in the tail piece. Liking the empty space under the seat.
-
Thanks, thats really good advice. I'll give it a go!
-
Okay, I will be running 17" 's so i will sort the front end first as you suggest. Did you take account of the angle of the original swingarm and rake and trail calculations ? ( thats the bit that starts to get a bit fuzzy at the edges for me)

Any idea of how they worked out the triangulation as I dont want to mess up the steering etc. if I alter the shock mounts.
-
Great pic, looks like they have completely altered the rear of the frame, but i get the idea. The 1980's build sounds good.
-
That would be great, thanks.

Trying to work out how to fit a GSXR750M swingarm and wheel into a GS550 frame, and run it twin shock. Have you got any pictures of the relocated shock mounts. What length shocks were you running?

Yes, that all sounds like a good plan. I have the 550 donor engine, looks in good nick, new gaskets etc, but not looked at the bottom end yet. 650 top end on its way. I was hoping to get hold of an set of Wiseco or similar 65mm pistons which take it up to a 740cc using the 650 barrels, but not sure where to find them. I contacted Wiseco and they only do the 65mm pistons for the GS750 and they wont work with the 650 head (I have read that the 550/750 have hemispherical combustion chambers and the 650 has something else) So not sure where to look for them next. got a GSXR 750 front and rear end to somehow persuade to fit and a nice tank. hopefully It will turn out okay. If you know of anyone who may be good for the 65mm pistons I would be interested.
-
Good point, what do you suggest for the bottom end?
-
GS550 - 225mm wide swingarm, but there is probably enough space between the frame rails to fit a 235mm arm
-
yes, maybe. I think the 750 pistons are 65mm, but would they be okay with the 650 head?
-
I thought I better post this here as its an air cooled question, Its also in chat so I hope I dont break any rules! Looking at making a big bore GS550 by putting on the GS650 head and barrels, but then I saw that Wiseco used to do a 740cc kit for the 650, so It stands to reason that it will work on the 550 bottom end. Problem is they dont make the 65mm GS650/740 pistons anymore. anyone know what other pistons may work, or anyone done this ?

No, the pic is not my bike, just one I saw. It certainly looks like a gsx head, but It fits the frame really well, I thought the GSX750 motor may be too large for the GS frame. As you say, the gsx 550 looks totally different with its 2 carbs. I was under the same impression as you on the bike frame/identity, but I read somewhere on the DVLA/VOSA sites that, "legaly" it should retain the frame and one other major component i.e suspension/ engine. But this may well be only for cars and not apply to bikes. I think that ultimately, my choice of engine will be based on my own air cooled vs oil air cooled argument. Is putting a totally different, albiet much more powerful engine, in a frame moving too far away from the original bike? What I am after building is the bike I wanted my old gs550 to be, back in the day, something that is nice to ride, looks good and can handle the power. I am quite keen to try the 550/650 conversion as it gives a hefty power increase. maybe I need two bikes!, or three......or......

Did Suzuki make a gs 550 for the U.S market with a gsx style top end, or is it a home brew gs/gsx mix?
-
I have a GSXR 750 donor bike to build up the GS, but although i originally thought the 750 was a good idea, I think I may try the 550 upgrade first and get on the road with the modern suspension etc. before I do the big 750 swap. I also wondered about it changing to an oil cooled 750 in terms of MOT, insurance etc. as it really wont look much like a gs to anyone who knows their stuff and I can imagine some MOT testers being a bit nosey about it too.
-
I like the idea of trying out the 650 (673cc) as It will still retain the GS character. Thanks for the tip about the owners club
-
You make it sound so simple! I will take a look over at the gs resources site, cheers
-
Good to know the carbs fit. I was going to put a GSXR 750 in the frame, but I thought it may be a bit too much, so will try with the old GS 550 first. I think the 650 swap gives about the same power as the standard GS750, but much lighter so should go well. I have GSXR front and back end to go on, just looking for some bodywork and should be good to go.
-
I had a look around, but couldn't find any builds which have done the swap, or much info. anyone point me in the right direction?
-
Thanks, thats much better than what I had.

I am after a GSXR 750 M workshop manual, nothing on "the bay" at the moment so I downloaded a couple of free manuals but the quality is poor and some bits are hard to read. Has anyone got any suggestions about where to get a decent, preferably printed, version of the workshop manual. I wasn't sure if it needed to be specifically for the '91 M, or if the earlier model manuals cover most things for all of the slingshot years.

It is the tunnel width I am most concerned about, I dont have a seat, so will probably make one fit whatever tank I go for. I was hoping thet the width of the GS750/1000 tanks are somewhere near the width of the GS550 tank, so It fits the frame without too much fuss.
