GSX 750 Inazuma 1200 transplant

Hi All,

I'm in the process of transplanting a bandit 1200 engine into my 750 Inazuma, I've read some posts already on the forum but I've a question for anyone who may have already done this.

Has anyone who has fitted a 1200 or 1100 lump used the original airbox? I was hoping to to use the original airbox with the 36mm Bandit carbs (the 750 and 1200 Inazumas both use 34mm carbs) I think it'll need a bit of modification to take the new rubbers, before I go to the trouble It would be nice to know if the airflow will be enough for the 36mm carbs or if a K&N filter for the Inazuma will be enough. I'd rather use the airbox than dual pod filters as I can be out in all weathers and I've read they generally run better with an airbox, but if pod filters are the best option at least I can take the airbox out before I refit the engine.

I could use the 34mm carbs but I'm not sure how that would affect the performance, I like the 1200 as it is so I don't want to strangle it.

I'm going to use the bandit CDI in the Inazuma loom, cable wise it looks like a direct replacement, there doesn't seem to be any issues with this.

Is there anything I should know that might catch me out along the way?

Any help appreciated :)

I have just put a gsx1100f engine in my inazuma frame  yes have to drill the bottom engine mount   Raise the tank at back 10mm  to clear the engine I’ll be using pod filters so I didn’t try lining the air box up  the only issue I’ve found is getting the rocker cover on/off is the coil brackets get in the way I had to bend it  I believe on the 1200 inazuma suzuki  moved the coils up between the frame rails to get the clearance

Thanks for the reply and the pictures, much appreciated.

 I was considering a gsx1100 engine but I got a bandit for a good price .

I take it the silver part on the tank mount bracket is your 10mm spacer.

Could I ask what you painted the engine with? It looks really clean.

I'm going to do a rough build as a start to make sure everything works as it should.

Good info re the coils, I might relocate the brackets before I get the frame tarted up.

While we're on the subject of coils, can I use the 750 coils on the 1200 motor or is it worth using the coils off the bandit?

Yes the  piece of aluminium is the 10mm tank spacer  I’ve used Simoniz gloss black engine enamel to paint it  when I put the in I swopped the electrics to suit the loom  I don’t  know if the bandit cdi is a straight swop it would be interesting to find out if anybody has done it  like I say if you look on that web site  or part  sights on gsx1200 frames  the seem to be relocated up  between the frame rails I’ve used a slabside rocker cover because it’s smaller than any other and I still had to bend the bracket to get it over the cam towers

I can see some experimenting with relocating the coils might be needed .

Have you had the bike running now, has the engine paint finish been OK and durable, Did you use the etch primer as well or just paint it?

All useful stuff to know when the time comes.

No not had the bike running that’s as far as it’s got the engine hasn’t been etched primed the instructions say to degrease and lightly sand  before painting  a freind did his engine with it last year and his finish was good

The Simoniz engine paint is very good, did my GS1000 motor in it about 2-3 years ago and apart from the odd small chip (that I did dropping a spanner on it) it's like I have just done it. (y) even holds up to fuel dripping on it xD

You can us the 750 could on the 1200. I think the only thing you would need to look at when you move them is If the HT leads still reach?

Thanks guys, I think that's the engine paint sorted then :)

I think the bandit coils have longer leads, I've got the option of both so I can have a proper look when the time comes.

Plan A is to put the 1200 engine and anything else I need from the bandit onto the Inazuma then put the 750 into the Bandit and sell it on as a running 750 bandit thingy.

@1100fred Bike looking good there, are they GSX , XJR or aftermarket rear shocks? My originals are looking very sorry for themselves at the moment, I've been looking at replacement options, what forks have you used? I've already got 1200 forks in my 750, got fed up changing fork seals every year for the MOT, still trying to decide whether to go for USD front end but that can be done anytime.
