I would look at a different way of sealing it. Possibly coating a stud with sealant and threading it in, after thoroughly cleaning the affected area. As they say, it needs to be clean enough to eat off of.
If i was to get that welded by the AL welders i know, it would be tear down time and haul the case half off to be cleaned at a shop.

Some more structural work and that will be fine. Im not a fan of the oversized holes, those inserts are going to move around when welded. Another issue, what are the odds they are not in the same location side to side.

Im a little late to the party, but i say go 4mm and dimple die the holes. Would be plenty strong then.

I’ve never seen designed in China, only made in China . I’ve been in manufacturing for 35+ years. I’ll never knowingly buy anything from China unless I have no choice. esp rods. You think they can prove they are actually 4340??!! Lol
