On my first EFE I cut a section out of the bottom of the light and glued in a clear piece from another taillight but that was 20 years ago. These days I'd do as Wraith suggested and use LED's

Grease gun will get it out as Swiss Toni says. Have used that trick a few times, a little bit of mess to clean up but normally the relief of getting the piston out makes up for it.
