Couldn't resist just putting the tank and seat on the bike to see what it looks like. Unfortunately I have a weekend of family duties ahead of me so no chance to crack on with wiring and other bits. Mrs S away next weekend though so shed time beckons.

Fairing and the ring for the fuel cap not yet finished but the end is in sight. At least now I can make sure all the electric components don't hit the tank or seat and crack on with the rewire.

I spoke to Robinsons as they still list UK spec mirrors but when they checked with Suzuki they were zero stock so now all gone.

I had the Slabbie out the garage over the weekend. First time it's been out since Suzuki returned it from Motorcycle Live (I know please dont abuse me). I noticed the near side mirror seems to be just flapping around in the breeze. I am proud that it's all original so dont want to resort to Eblag pattern parts or similar but can one repair these? Glass is intact, it just no longer holds in a set position. I guess someone gave it a bit of a knock when it was away. Can't see any way of taking it apart.

still no bodywork so still no progress. Other toys taking priority. Seriously pissed off now

I think they restricted in a number of ways but they are well down on power compared to UK/Europe models. Electronically they restrict via the ECU which we replaced with Dyna system. Exhaust and inlet apparently are also restricted. Exhaust has long gone and cams were replaced but i have UK spec CV carbs with K&N pod filters. I think the carbs were off an EFE. I was told CV carbs are impossible to set up and balance properly without being linked via the airbox. I do have the Japanese airbox.

I was recommended to refit the airbox to my Katana to try help sort fuelling issues. I understand CV type carbs dont like pod type filters. Something in the back of my mind says one of the areas of power restriction on Japanese market Katana was the airbox. Is this correct? If so anything me and Mr Dremel can do to sort that?

Wicked rumor floating round that my tank and seat unit could now have paint on them! so far only evidence is an email declaring finish is in sight. No photos or large boxes from DHL yet. We live in hope! No mention of the fairing though.

who does your paint? Mine went off to paint in March with a "it will be done by Xmas". That was 2015 and it's still not back. Everytime i chase it I get "I'm just finishing the graphics and top coating". Does it really take 4 months to lacquer?

Yes, it's a Japanese import and that is an age related plate. It is a 1994 model imported to UK in 1999. It does have an assisted clutch and a slightly smaller tank to accommodate this. It was restricted for the home market but we stripped all the restrictions out via removing airbox, stock ignition and exhaust. It does need some setting up as it is clearly not jetted correctly. As to habit forming it's a bit late.....garage is already filled with a variety of big Z's and the shed stocked with boxes of bits I'll never use. I'm not really big on stock though. Pet hate on another forum is always the anorak that chips in with the "it''s got the wrong rivet" on every post.

In 1982 a spotty 17 year old wobbled in to Eastbourne Corporation road depot on his XL125S to do some bike training in an attempt to appease my mother who was distinctly unimpressed with my birthday present I had bought myself. She was even more impressed with my Dad who provided the loan and never told her! Any how just after I turned up the instructor arrived on an 1100 Katana freshly collected from Park Motorcycles in Hampden Park. I could not be more impressed and a pillion ride later cemented a desire for a Katana in to my bucket list. Over the years I've attempted to buy numerous examples to either be outbid in the dying seconds or turning up to find scrapheaps where pristine was in the advert text. 12 months ago a close acquaintance mentioned he might be tempted to sell his Japanese import Katana 1100SY and a deal was struck in seconds. The bike was cosmetically sound but had a knackered motor thanks to some ham fisted spannering by a previous owner. The deal was for a down payment on the bike with a further settlement once the motor was rebuilt to my spec. It's now 1170cc Wiseco with Dyna ignition, EFE Carbs with pod filters to remove all the Japanese market restrictions. It sailed through MOT last week and I got my first brief ride today. Jetting is not right as it does not pick up cleanly but i need to get some miles in to break in the motor before it gets proper dyno set up. Only 34 years of waiting

Mark, it is your fairing! As to what it looks like now god only knows. It went off for paint with the seat and tank well over a year ago and is still not back. I use Simon at Flying Tiger for paint and the guy is a perfectionist but painfully slow. He told me it took a lot to repair historical repairs. He promised me it was going to all finished for Christmas but didn't say what year. I chased him a couple of weeks ago and he told me he just needed to apply graphics and lacquer so hopefully not too much longer. I'm not chasing him as I'm broke and if he is finished he'll want paying. He's also got my Lawson and Moto Martin so god knows when I'll see them back.

If you need any other specific photos let me know. The original subframe and battery box had been chopped off. This was a replacement made and welded on by Mike Woods at Full Metal Ornament in Bampton.

Why do all Magnum's have such a mess of a loom? Mine was such a mess I will have to start again.

The plan is to return it to as close to how it should have looked in the 80's. I managed to find Harris yokes on Eblag and the Astralites were bought off one of the Classic Endurance teams when they stopped competing. I had AP calipers already for another project which i recycled on to here. Harris exhaust has been done in satin black Cerakote which looks ok. Headers are rather pitted but they will be hidden under the fairing. The design for the paint is similar to the white scheme used on the period Harris brochures. Next job is to make a loom but I need the bodywork back as I need to make sure I have clearance under the tank for the Dyna coils plus mountings for things like regulator/rectifier so it does snag the body. It was supposed to have been finished at Christmas. He just didn't say what year.

I started this off as a project thread in the old site. Most frustrating I have made little progress in the last 12 months as I am waiting for the bodywork to return from paint. I have a great painter, absolute perfectionist but so slow it's unbelievable. The first picture was how it arrived with me. Guy i bought it from included the original seat unit and I got a fairing from I think it's another OSS member. The paint on the side of the fairing accurately described the condition of the bike. Final picture is where we are now. Only taken nearly 3 years!
