Its a roller  crank, big burly bearings they are too.......I is with Vizman on this output shaft bearing is the usual suspect:pimp:

Plus 1 for the output shaft bearing. GSX crank roller bearings are pretty tough. Do you know the origin and age of your engine internals?

  3. Yeah I know a lot of people don't de seam their wheels for safety reasons but all I can say is that I ran my old GSX for  years with de seamed wheels without any issues. The seams do look ugly though.

  4. If you're going to do the B12 front end thing with B12 wheels then I'd definitely get them de seemed as the B12 wheels look absolute pants with the seams still there.

  5. Well there's these before and after pics and my build thread is in OSS member projects under Melbourne muscle project re visited although I think some of the pics have been lost :(  http://oldskoolsuzuki.info/forums/index.php?/topic/1296-melbourne-muscle-project-re-visited/

For what it's worth, and I am obviously a bit biased, do whatever you need to do to finish your project and take as long as you need to to finish your project because when it's done all the pain, expense and frustration will be worth it when you press the button and twist the go handle. My ET puts such a big shit eating grin on my face whenever I get it out on to the open roads. Good luck.

  6. I used a Serck 13 row oil cooler with HEL lines and fittings on my ET and it keeps my oil nice and cool. I used the same set up when I lived in the UK with no problems. As Pedda said EFE oil filter cover or original et cover with a plug fitted internally.

  7. I know that these old air cooled motors can get very expensive when upping the performance on them. I probably spent as much if not more money on safeguarding my engine, whether it was deemed "necessary" or not, as much as making it produce more power so that I have confidence that my engine will hold together regardless. This approach was based on many disappointments, ie, breakdowns of my old ET motor which I acknowledge was largely due to my own ineptitiude and ignorance in set up and maintenance ,etc.

I also had my engine assembled by a trusted and respected engine guy here in Melbourne. An expensive approach maybe but I see it as insurance because boy do these old aircooled motors put a big shit eating grin on yer dial when you twist the loud handle. Each to their own I suppose on how far you want to go and how you choose to go about it. Good luck with your project.

  8. As far as exhaust systems go Dave at exhaustcraft.co.uk if the go to guy. I'd be looking at external oil lines to the cylinder head from a safety point of view and GSX 750 oil pump gears for increased oil flow. Dyna 3ohm (green) coils with silicine leads and Dyna S ignition are good ideas too.

I'm in Oz like Gammaboy too so have fitted a thirteen row oil cooler to mine for safety's sake. Maybe less neede for it in your part of the world but these big old aircoolers produce a shit load of heat when they've been breathed on so an oil cooler won't do any harm(unless installed in correctly,ie, without the EFE oil filter cover or the little alloy plug if using the original oil filter cover)

Hi flow fuel tap such as a Pingel is a good idea too.

    Have fun

  9. I did read through your thread.  I acknowledge, however, that I  misinterpreted your post, I blame the Yarra Valley Shiraz :)  Good on you for taking the plunge and buying it,  I look forward to seeing what you do with it. I have a soft spot for the old air cooled GSX'es of whichever model year.

  10. It's a thirty plus year old bike so stop thinking about value for money, resale value, how much it will cost to do this that and the other and all that sort of shit, the basics are there and it has a shit load of potential. . Save up, get a loan, sell the fuckin GSXR thing and invest in and love  a proper air cooled monster.

These old bikes need time money and passion if you don't have all of them then sell it to someone that has and will appreciate what it is. A winter fuckin ride indeed.

Sorry to sound a bit harsh but I love these old air cooled GSX'es and they should be cherished and loved...........................big bored tuned to fuck and made to look killer, ahem :)
