Hi Folks
Hope everyone is doing well. I’ve been slowly working on my gs1000 every so often and a couple of weeks ago I decided to install some headers, an exhaust and some k&n air filters.
I went up on the pilot jet to a 17.5 and 130 main jet. Bike idles good and starts good. 3/4 throttle and up is also good. Issue I’m having is when I’m cruising from 1/4-3/4 throttle the bike seems to hesitate and bog quite a bit. Air screw is out 2 turns and fuel screw is out 2 1/4 turns.
Needle clip is in its stock position. Would adjusting the needle clip be the solution?
What do you folks think it may be?
All the best!!
Carlos

I think the white smoke was water vapor. It’s gone away since. I still notice it’s takes a while to warm up though. Would switching to a 17.5 help with that issue?

I swapped to iridium because I was told it might help a bit with idling. I don’t notice much of a difference though. I’ll check the plugs again sometime down the road. I’m still learning about the wrenching side of bikes, a lot to learn for sure.

I rebuilt the carbs last week with new components from the Keyster kit and the GS1000 seems to be running fairly good. Especially compared to how it was running before.
the only “issue” I seem to be having is it takes a while to warm up before the throttle is fully responsive. Would going up a size in the pilot jet be the solution? It’s currently stock at 15, I’m thinking of swapping for a 17.5
I also noticed some white smoke coming out of the right side pipe but that only happens when I first start the bike then it goes away. Any thoughts?
best

p.s. Also swapped the petcock for a pingel and capped the vacuum port.

its a wes cooley style fairing.. got in on flea bay a couple yrs ago ..you could pick white or black.. prices vary ...i can only see the white ones on it now..and the fitting kit is another 130 or 140 pounds sterling...so i ve been planning on getting one of these bikes for a few yrs now...https://www.Eblag.co.uk/itm/255878843013?hash=item3b93914a85:g:3k4AAOSwb9ZjmhJw&amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAA4CSN3WPnbFMr9CPPbrfRtTMYIE%2FEEjW12WFUL56%2FtFk1zcx6Z1N%2BrxMESV9Hujh7VbtOyHS9yHpMWTDVXSxasWzBTNX3UvWdYBqQxMRAjr0Ezx86RC4I4fCSFzYPosyD6WYOpFNDEnxDXdEB5OBJFCCXZJD5itkIeiOHgC%2BdLOVWPKvmD4FGZ%2FGKUO5dmjRtS0U7DqsnuyBQXqIVZpyUx9LhDO0zY2SOLYrZLLXgMztTTyevXVcUSilJlimAZHTIxzu11G%2Fmf3iD9OnYIwZngOFz1IqZVdfz%2BrgdoJc%2FhCSG|tkp%3ABk9SR-CDzoi1Yg
Lol. I totally worded that wrong. I meant what’s the story on acquiring the bike? Was it something that just popped up locally or you’ve been trying to source a gs1000?

What are your thoughts on Keyster carb kits? When rebuilding carbs is it a good idea to go with a carb kit or just replace o rings?
Any other kits available for a ‘78 GS1000 that doesn’t break the bank but comes with quality components? Has cycleorings.com changed websites?
thanks

That fairing looks real nice! What’s the story behind acquiring it? Found it in the wild or was it something that popped up locally?
Super cool bike!!

Congrats!! Nice score!!! What kind of work you gotta do to it?
I’d love to see more pics

Thanks Gixer1460! I believe the float valves are good, they were functioning well the last time I set them.
Other than remembering to shut the valve off any other issues I should be worried about? Is it a matter of simply plugging the vacuum port on the carburetor and switching the petcock?
has anyone done this operation? Any thoughts on it?

Hi
Thoughts on any good fuel valve replacements for a 78 GS1000? I bought a cheapo one from Amazon but a component inside broke!! Do you folks know of any good replacements?
Edit: i found a pingle fuel valve locally but I have to rebuild it and it doesn’t have a vacuum inlet. Would that be an issue?
all the best
thank you

Thank you folks! Hopefully I’ll have the bike running in the next few days.

Just a quick update for future reference. I followed the steps as instructed by BigT and everything came together nicely. Bike is sounding incredible, idles beautifully at about 1,100rpm. Doesn’t seem to have any issues and the third cylinder is heating up like the others (really appreciate all the folks that commented on this thread as it helped me out a TON) I will keep an eye on the bike in the next couple days and hopefully it continues to run well.
Next step is to vacuum sync the carbs to dial them in better and I should be good to go.
Does the tank have two vent hoses and one vacuum hose?

Didn’t have a chance to pull the carbs until today…….for the third time
BigT, I’m glad you mentioned to check the hole in the carb body, one of them was clogged with a broken tip. I managed to get that out. Weird thing is that it was the second carb that was blocked but I’ve been having an issue with the third cylinder, third is the one that’s not heating up to temp.
I’ve reassembled the carbs and hopefully I have a chance to try it out this evening.

Thank you! I’m going to have a thorough look at the manual and let you know what settings work best for me!

Thank you Gixer1460! That illustration is perfect. I’m a newbie with these carbs so that’s very helpful.
Questions about the air/fuel mixture idle jets; should they be perfect? I noticed one of them is in rough shape compared to the others. Should I replace that and is it something that I can walk into any bike shop and pick up or are these special order items.

I’ve pulled the carbs out and they were very dirty. I guess the residue from the tank was not cleaned properly. Now I’m working on bench syncing the carbs, which I’ve never done before.
I’ve attached a photo and had a question regarding the components. Should they all be seated all the way down or should any of them be turned out a little. What are the names of the components in the photo?
again, thank you all for the help.

With the symptoms I’m having would I be putting it in clip position 2 or 4?
is it a fairly easy task to change the clip position? I haven’t seen any info on disassembly of the needle.
thanks again for the help guys. This is the first bike I’ve ever “wrenched” on before
