  1. Crank cost me £900 in total. Took us a while to find someone who's experienced in them, but got some advice from Sean at big cc, about somebody who does them for drag bikes with the same engines etc.

Understand about the twisting and keeping revs under control but figured whilst I'm there might as well get it done!

Bearings were actually fine, but it's coming up 40 years old, and I've refreshed practically everything, so no point skimping on the crank.

Better doing it right than doing it twice!

  2. Slowly coming along.

Engine now vapour/bead blasted, come back very nice.

Crank should be back tail end of January. Took forever to find a place that'll guarantee the weld. Full replacement of bearings. Bloody pricey!

    Boreing up to 1180cc.

Also came across this. Not sure how accurate it is, but apparently only 3 GS1100X are active in the UK? Doesn't sound right to me but

What is it about the standard brakes that you find "horrendous"?

If they're working properly then the only improvement that can be made is to prolonged or repeated braking. Under those circumstances fitting brakes that dissipate the heat more quickly will keep the braking efficiency up for longer.

If it's stopping hard and fast in an emergency, then it's impossible to do any better than stock brakes. The tyre's grip on the road will be the limiting factor as the brakes are more than capable of locking the wheel.

It's more the stopping distance is seriously bad. 120 ft at 60 mph. I guess I'm more used to modern bikes which seem to be far better. I just want something with a little more oomph, especially considering the weight of the bike. 2 pots would be more than adequate I feel.

The problem is, it doesn't stop hard and fast in an emergency.

  4. Hi all,

Rebuild of the GSX is going well. WIll update my thread shortly with more up to date photos.

However, I'm looking at improving the braking. The back I probably won't touch, but I'd like to at least upgrade the front to dual pots.

I had a quick search through the forum, but think I may be blind as couldn't find anything, but I'm sure I've read before.

    Anyway;

    1. any recommendations on calipers that I can use to increase the braking on the bike as stock is bloody horrendous. (And considering I'll be boring it to 1280, feel it's a necessity!)

    2.  Any other recommendations on what to do to the front end, whilst retaining the original forks?

    3. Last question is, any recommendations on where to get hold of an adequate crank, that I can get welded? I can use my original, but will need new bearings which cost a bloody lot. I'll need to get it welded as well, as believe they're prone to twisting if you bore the engine.

    Thanks :)

No one ever told you about the unwritten rule that when the cylinders come of you need to put a high compression big bore kit on? ;)

Off course this goes together with a proper camshaft and matching Mikuni RS carbs... ;)

I've been told that if you do put a big bore on, you also need to get the crank welded to stop any twisting. You had any experience with this?

The plan for mine is to bore it out, and go up a size slightly but also need to get the bearings redone on the crank as well. Pretty costly, around £180 each, and 6 are needed. Does that sound right?

Just realised I have absolutely no idea how to get a vid on here. The camera file will be quite big so how do I upload it?

Best thing would be to upload it to streamable - https://streamable.com/

If you create an account, it'll be there until you delete it. Just paste the link :)

Your picture of the Exhaust Craft pipe was the one that made me order one and it's now on its way to me, can't wait to fit it!

You'll probably hear those before I do! Please send a video once you've got them fitted. I'm desperate to hear what mine sound like, but likely won't be for another month or so!

    Damn his exhausts look good!

Just saw your keys on the worktop .

Ah yes! I have a Triumph Boneville 865 SE custom, as well as a 1200 Bandit chop. Great bikes :)

I have seen several low mileage/ rebuilt cranks for sale recently for £200.

Nice. Might take a look see what I can find in that regard then!

See your other bike is a T .

Sorry? Not sure if I'm confused over something menial. I have a triumph as well. But not sure your meaning? :)

How's the project going? Got the exhaust on yet? Love to see pictures and maybe sound!

Not just yet! Really want to hear what it sounds like, but not rebuilt the engine yet! Hopefully another month or so to go! Definitely will post some when possible!

  12. All paint now done. Seat also recovered.

You're correct in that it's not plated, sleeved. My bad there. Just deciding on piston size to use. Then to get it bored out.

Also, crank bearings. Not currently an issue but they're almost 40 years old so feel they need replacing. Feel if I don't I'll regret it later down the line if there's an issue. However there's 5,and they're about £180 each from what I've seen. Might be cheaper buying a new crank.

Engines fully stripped and being sent off this week for sand blasting.

Going to take the air suspension out and put harder springs in the front forks. Deciding on which front brakes to use as more braking is definitely needed. Any recommendations?

    More pictures to follow soon.

  13. Plus one for Exhaustcraft. He built me a beautiful pipe for my 1100. Feel free to look at my post to see some pictures. He had my old harris which he replicated.

  14. Yikes. Finally had it apart. The plating on the cylinder isn't looking good. The pressure test also was shit.

    Cylinder 1 is 150. 2 is 170. 3 is 140. 4 is 130.

Man this isn't going to be cheap. Looks like a big bore, replate and new pistons required..

    Some more pictures

If you would please, I had an idea the process would be quite expensive but its one of them jobs you dont have to do again.

A mate of mine had it done on one of his bikes but the company wont touch anymore bike wheels. Cheers

Haha, there's probably a good reason for that! I know they were hesitant to doing it in the first place, but the mechanics I know somewhat insisted with them to do it.

I'll get you some details sent across tomorrow!

Wheels look great, i was thinking of having mine diamond cut. Where did you have them done? Also if you dont mind me asking, how much am i looking at?

Quoted £200 for them initially. Although, they forgot to quote for the diamond cutting, so cost me a little more. £300 in total. Had them done in a place local to me Berkshire way. I can PM you some details if you like?
