  1. With anything of this age, you have no ide of the real mileage, whether it's got the original engine, when it last had a rebuild or what's happened with it. If it runs nicely, it's mechanically quiet, no smoke, rides well and generally seems ok then I'd ignore the mileage.
  2. Thanks @DuckndiveI see now. I couldn't work out how those parts came off the back plate, I just needed to pull a bit harder.
  3. I'm replacing the dead TCI ignition unit in my 4 cylinder 1982 GS500EZ (GS550EZ import with smaller bore) and I'm a bit unsure about fitting the crank pickup assembly. The instructions for the new parts are based on the points ignition model. Could anyone give me some advice please? I've attached a couple photos of the new and old parts together (the smaller one without advance is new) http://www.boyerbransden.com/pdf/KIT00090.pdf
  4. Electrex World don't have one, I did phone and ask. The only new ones I can find are around £400 while a used one from a 90's GS500 is £65.
  5. The electronic ignition CDI unit in my 1982 GS500E (smaller, import GS550E) has failed. It's the same unit used on the GS550 and GS750 as well as the GS450 & GS250 twins of that age. They seem to be rare and expensive here in the UK. I found something online suggesting that the CDI from the 90's twin cylinder GS500 will work. Can anyone confirm?
  6. I'm having some trouble working out how to disassemble my forks. The Haynes manual says to unscrew the threaded top but there isn't one. How do I remove the damper and spring?
  7. I've looked up the cylinder base gaskets. The GS550 part is the same as the GS500 but the 650 has a different part number and is visibly different.
  8. Thanks Daz. I want to keep to upgrades of that period and keep it looking original so won't go for the oil cooled engine. I'm finding conflicting info on the performance difference between 500 & 550. some sources suggest it's around 5hp, others suggest around 20hp. It's not currently running so I have no idea what it goes like. If it's a 20hp difference, then I'll definitely go for the 550 conversion
  9. Hi. I'm looking at buying a 1982 GS500E four cylinder. It seems like it's quite a rare model and info isn't easy to find. As far as I can find, it was based on the 550 and only sold in a few countries. Can anyone point me at a good source of info for this bike? One thing I'm wondering is what the differences are between the 500 and 550? Would it be easy to convert it to 550 spec?
