  1. In answer to the original question, the GS500E twin is very different to a GS750.

I think there was a four cylinder GS500  from the late 70's which was a sleeved down version of the GS550 but that has different engine mounts from the GS750 too.

If you really want to put a GS500 engine in the 750 frame it'd be a pretty simple job making the engine mounts.

Been told that the GS750 gear box has a smaller 1and 2 gears so you get more acceleration and the top gears 3,4 and 5 are the same as the GS1000 so you don't lose top end.

I got a GS750 gear box and counted the teeth on all gears and they are the same as the GS1000 gear box.

So is it me or are both gear boxes the same? Anybody know for sure or was it a one-off model of 750?

So did you ever find out the answer?

  3. If all you got was a sticking float valve and crumbly gaskets it sounds like you got off lightly

    - No broken/ bent needles? green, white or brown jelly? jets so corroded you can't read the numbers? float bowl corroded through?

deep corrosion craters in the carb body? dented floats? differents jets/ needles in each carb? Jets blocked with hylomar? Jets drilled on the piss?

holes blocked with self tapping screws? Broken drill bits left in the jets? Bent nail used as float pin? holes repaired with chemical metal?

  5. :tu  Cheers guys, I've been on a high for weeks- now we need to start properly prepping the bike for it's next outing.

It might still be summer but the clock's ticking, It'll soon be time for the sand-racing season at Mablethorpe and It will be the anniversary 50th season.

Would be really nice to bag a couple of those trophies so we're gonna have to make sure the bike is 100% and get some practice in- nothing can quite compare to the east coast on a Winters morning so we'll have to make do with a couple of flattrack sessions and hope for the best...

  6. Well I think that went pretty well, here's the short version-

Buy cheap bike on face book then leave it in a dusty old barn for 18months or so  879083330_wp_20190612_15_06_21_pro(2).thumb.jpg.f3f094129aa8e1676c831efc7469c5d0.jpg

Shove it into the boot of an old Rover and drive to Scunthorpe  wp_20190614_19_33_50_pro.thumb.jpg.e9e9a921b80e6b516551b4289c128318.jpg

Go home clutching  a Gauche Glittery Day-glo trophy for a podium finish in one of the toughest classes :banana:wp_20190615_21_41_07_pro.thumb.jpg.56e6dd1cb6e88461fb461d072897a249.jpg

  7. So a two metre square corner by the front door surrounded by rubble & dead projects does'nt make for an ideal workspace but the Motorcycle lift in the workshop is already blocked by yet another project so we just had to make the best of what we had and work on our knees on the cold concrete floor.

My mate worked his usual magic and cobbled together a footpeg, we spent an afternoon sorting the clutch, literally took an angle grinder to the rear tyre to shave off enough rubber so we could squeeze it into the swingarm, tweaked the carbs and decided to ignore the knackered wheel bearings

  8. It was'nt looking good last week, the bike did start-      eventually

but one exhaust was smoking horrifically, it was miss firing, the clutch was dragging, the rear tyre was too

wide and dragging on the swingarm, rear wheel bearings were shot, we only had one footrest etc. etc.

That was just a week ago, since then most of the issues have been resolved and we're feeling hopeful, and fairly convinced it'll hold together for the races on Saturday

  9. Finally had an opportunity to get a proper look at the machine a couple of days ago-        Oh dear.

I did have dreams of going home after the event with a trophy or two but seriously having doubts now. I should be able to find a couple of hours spare for a little bit of fettling  but the complete strip & rebuild it  really deserves is gonna have to wait.

Whats the worst that could happen?

  10. Tick... Tock... Tick... Tock...

Times running out, only a matter of days now till I finallly get to put the old GT through it's paces.

It aint pretty but It's a genuine certified race winner ( at least that's what the previous owner told me ) so If I don't come home clutching a trophy I can't blame the machinery.

It does'nt look much like it did when it left the factory, the previous owner did  a fair amount of work to make it run well off road- I have'nt laid a finger on it, I have'nt actually

seen it since I handed over the cash about 18 months ago. Since then it's been languishing in my mates barn so I hope it still runs.

I've never even started it up let alone ridden it but hopefully it'll be alright on the night- I never got round to replacing my stolen bike trailer & the Tranny van got sold for scrap to

a couple of  Gypos last year so we'll have to shove it in the boot of the Rover to get it up to Scunthorpe for Dirt Diggers 2  on June 15th. Any one else going? If not I'll send you a postcard,

  11. Pretty much anything goes in the roadbike classes, people have tried everything from MZ125's to Fireblades but the way the classes are split a venerable DR350 might struggle as it would be in the open class.

Several years ago In desperation to get back out there racing again I bodged, butchered and shoe-horned some MX wheels and knobbly tyres into my daily commuter SV650 and had a go on that, it was pretty good of the line, I was always in with a chance at getting the holeshot but the weight of the machine quickly overcame the responsiveness of the suspension on the rutted course, all too often the bucking & weaving ended up with me flat on my face in the sand.

The engine had the speed but the chassis would need some serious modification before I had any hope of picking up trophies

  12. And so it begins... again.

Years ago I got drawn into the wacky world of racing motorcycles.

It all began quite innocently- you start with what seems harmless & easily available, first it's trackdays then roadracing but after a while that's just not enough and you need something more, that itch just that won't go away, like a junkie you keep searching for something a little edgier, grittier so I dabbled with a bit off offroad then flattracking but still it just was'nt enough and then I got  hooked, I found the high I lusted for & it was Beach racing, not Weston Super mare once a year Moto cross style, not one off Welsh beach drag race style but pure hardcore week in, week out a regular fortnightly hit for nigh on six months of the  year going round and round in circles on Mablethorpe beach.
