  1. good morning all

i had a problem with the bike last year

stationary it sounds and runs just fine but out on the road it went no faster than approx 30mph

trying to get it to pick up loud bang backfired and blew a fuse had to push it back home 1 mile old man pushing his bike in 30 degree heat in the summer time not a good luck

it has k&n foam air pods  i have gone 2 sizes up with the main jet

    any thoghts on this issue

    thanks john

  2. Does anyone know where to get the extra strong diaphragm from the type that does not require the plastic retaining clips as you all will know they just snap when trying to remove them

utube are suggesting they do exist but where

its for my new project an early not sure of the year gs400 or maybe a gs450 the gs550 jets and gaskets fit this carb .

    thanks john

  3. Hi all , does anyone know the minimum diameter for the cam lobes or the useable limits for my 1980 gs550

ive just checked the gaps with a feeler gauge,  the limits are .03 to .08 mm  mine range from .1 to .2

should i worried or just look for thicker shims

    thanks john

  4. thank you so now i have mk1 bandit forks   i now have my wheels in using smaller wheels means the centre stand is to long does s anyone know if the gs500 (which uses the smaller bandit wheel) centre stand will fit the gs550 frame

    thanks

  5. Yes the mk1 front wheel  wheel catches on the nk2  forks. Its OK without the speedo drive.but then there's a large gap and no speedo drive. Looking around a mk 2 wheel is cheaper than M1 forks so I'll try that the the nk2 wheel have a different speedo drive.. This bike cost wise is getting out of control.

    Thanks

  6. Hi there slight progress with my gs550. Frame is back from the powder coaters. New swing arm bearings fitted... I've fitted a gs500 wheel that looks the same the bandit front wheel with plenty of clearance all round  But I have bought a really good mk1 bandit front wheel and tyre.

Now fitted the rf6oo bottom yoke. Bandit Top Yoke.

But it looks like I have mk2 forks and a Mk1 wheel and it doesn't between the forks discs catching on the left side of the forks..

So now either need a mk2 wheel or mk 1 forks....

so now I have my mk1 600 bandit top yoke.

Ignition switch on the bandit has 6 wires  gs550 has 4 wires and doesn't fit the bandit top yoke any ideas to which 2 wires were not needed on a bike 42 years ago..

There's a picture of my project. Thanks john

  8. youve all been amazing  .

what im going to do now is take the forks of my gs550 katana with twin brakes and put them on the gs55e to try and keep it fairly standard i think ???

and put the bandit forks in the cafe racer style katana (i had to cut the back end of as it was badly rotted through so thats not standard now anyway ) with the rf600 bottom yoke and bandit standard top yoke .( wraith suggested that thanks )

back to the current 1980 gs550e its coming appart relatively easy nothing major snapped yet but the carbs are all seized up.

under the metal box where the original air filter sytem is there is some electrical box secured to the underneath with about 5 or 6 wires coming out of it with a plug

now this thing was not on the 1983 gs550m .and i dont know its required and cant remember if i unplugged it or not .

it has an up to date regulater rectifier and it between writing this i have just seen the part on Eblag there calling it an igniter box .

do i need this part and if not do i have to do any thing with the wires (plug) thats in the wiring loom ..

i hope i am not doing your heads in after a busy day.

    thanks john

  9. good morning

with regards to rf600 bottom yoke and bandit forks  did you manage to fit the original wheel as ive found on Eblag a twin brake disk original gs550 wheel or do we have fit a bandit wheel  i already have the bandit wheel forks and the callipers..but not the rear wheel

also the rear wheel will the bandit wheel fit in the stock swing arm

  10. H i every one  i have just bought a 1980 gs550 in need of a lot of work

can anyone advise me on upgrading the front end it only has one brake calliper .

will a 600 bandit set up fit using the bandit top and bottom yokes

i know the forks on the bandit are a larger diameter and slightly longer

    thanks john

  11. hi wraith i would have used the k&n pods but cylinders 1 and 4 the pods are to long and catch on the frame and the ramair are foam so they squashed in

ive only put in a 100 main jets (stock is 92.5) perhaps i should go bigger

cnap  thanks i will double check my fuel lines again i have an after market pet cock maybe i should repair the original one, i will strip it all down again

thanks for all your help plenty to keep me going .john

  12. Hi Tonygee thanks for your reply i have fitted 2 jet sizes up from standard pilot and main jet

can i assume from your valued thoughts and experience that this is more likely a fuel issue and not a timing issue as really have nio idea .

    thanks john

  13. Hi hope everyone is keeping well .

having a few minor problems with gs550 m i have fitted new ramair air filter pods now it starts ok ticks over just fine around 1500 revs when warm

but when i take it out on the road it all goes wrong in excess of 3000 revs it just dies.   i dont know what causes this

tank is clean , new fuel , carbs have been stripped and cleaned .

any advise or thoughts would be much appreciated

    thanks john

  14. thanks wraith

its the bottom end thats the problem the gear selector shaft was bent and has broken of the case on the clutch side .

so if this gs650 is a chain drive you think it may fit

also someone has just offered me a gs 750 engine do you think that may fit

with the type of messing you spoke of does that involve welding in engine mounts .

    thanks john

  16. Hi there

i have just bought a 1983 gs550m katana it came it boxes i dont have a clue what im doing but plenty of time to do it .

most of the parts ive looked for only run up 1982 ie for seal retaining clips on Eblag and other sites they dont have any that say they will fit the 1983 model
