As long as we are talking about LiFePo4 batteries that are intended for lead battery replacement they don't need any special regulator. Just normal regulator that works should be fine. But updating to modern mosfet regulator is definitely a good idea since they should be more reliable and accurate than old ones.

Lithium-Ion batteries would be completely different story. They need different charging voltage and more precise charging control so connecting one to normal charging system is definitely a bad idea. But all these typical lithium batteries for bikes, Shorai, Antigravity etc, are LiFePo4 type as far as I know.

LiFePo4 batteries should be relatively safe even when overcharged. At least much safer than Li-Ion batteries that can easily burst in flames. LiFePo4 batteries should just die without any extra drama if you overcharge them. Of course there can be exceptions to this rule. On the other hand overcharging a lead-acid battery can be quite nasty as well in the worst case. Personally I have toasted just one LiFePo4 battery due to faulty regulator and it went like expected. The battery just died, no smoke, no flames, no swelling or anything like that. It was just a brick after that, didn't take or give any current.

Thank you for the explanation, I was unaware of the difference in Li-ion and LiFePo4. Could be as simple as a decent modern regulator upgrade and an Antigravity after all.

I've always used Varta batterys, there a acid battery but sealed for life, the one I used on both my big bore gs1000 and the oil cooled 1127 motor is the Varta  yxt9 which has a 8Ah capacity and CCA 135A , I know it's not the right spec for ever bike but it works ;)

    Sizes W 88mm L 152mm H 106mm

I'll check them out, thank you.

  3. I had (niavely) thought that the only things I had to think about when choosing a Lithium battery for my project bike was, is it small enough to fit? and does it have enough cranking amps?

I have been reading in horror some of the story's on here of these batteries bursting into flames or at least nearly combusting.

Has anyone cracked this 70's/80's bike with Lithium battery riddle yet? I've been told that a new mosfet reg/rec will be all I need to make sure the lithium battery doesn't get over charged and decide to cook me and my bike. I have then been assured by a retailer (Rex) of mosfet reg/recs that that is not true and I will be BBQ'd if I use a lithium battery.  There is a place in the states that say they have specific reg/recs for lithium batteries but at £140 plus the £200 for the Antigravity battery small enough and powerful enough for the job seems mighty steep! they set the voltage to 14v +/- .2 I believe any higher than 14.6v is when you start to get cooked?

I'm more than happy to replace the reg/rec but was hoping to use a £50-£60 unit, so then I thought GEL battery! but I can't find any as small as an 8 cell lithium, anyone got any experience with these? I don't want to switch to GEL and get cooked anyway.

  4. Gaskets and bolt sets arrived! Cylinder cover gasket was supposedly for 650e, l, gd and katana. It's almost good... Except for one bolt hole. It is the same as the one that was in there already so I trimmed it and fitted. I managed to find genuine e spec gaskets for the clutch and stator covers. 550 bolt kit, not so good. Seems there are either a lot of differences or my kit was crap or my engine has been drilled and tapped in places. Either way the bikes coming on nicely.

  5. Hi all,

I was lurking here months ago when I had a collection of GSX1100 parts cleverly posing as a single bike. Long story but now I have just taken on a 1981 GS650E, it's a project but appears to be all there and in fairly good condition.

I need to get a few bits and pieces for it such as gaskets for the clutch cover, cylinder head cover, magneto cover and a set of stainless engine bolts since these are either shabby, knackered or missing. The gaskets are available on CMS but are fairly pricey. There are a load of gaskets on Eblag for GS650's but I'm not convinced they will be correct for the E since I understand that it had a slightly different engine to the shaft drive models. Also there are loads of engine bolt kits for 750's and 550'd but the only 650's are Katana's.

Does anyone know if the engine covers and therefore gaskets were the same on the E (chain driven) and the other shaft driven 650's?

And would a 550 engine bolt kit work with the 650?

    Thanks in advance.

  6. Too much time scratching my head on this, I have another kid due in the spring so I've sold it to someone with more knowledge, ability and time. I'm now on the look out for another one that I'll have more chance of being able to complete.

I'd like to find something that is at least 100% together, I've grown to really appreciate these big Suzuki's since starting to look into them so I'm keeping my eyes peeled!

Thanks again for those that offered information and advice.

  7. The more I dig the more I think I have a collection of different GSX1100 parts, I'm quite sure it's just a Frankenstien. However I am now fully decided to try and get a running riding bike from the parts that I have and from some I still need to get. Thank you to all who commented, your advice and help is really appreciated.

  8. Hi all,

I've been in the garage doing some sorting (moved into this house in October and garage is still a dumping ground) I have found some more parts I didn't realise I had, such as a full wiring loom with Regulator/rectifier, switch gear and a brake pedal! not much to some but to me its quite a find!

With Jonboy's advice in mind I looked at the bottom engine mount cover and it is removable, also the frame has GSX110 stamped on it so I think it is a bastardised GSX frame I have.

I took some more pictures to show and hopefully these will make the model clearer/ give you all something to look at.

More good news, I found a garage fairly close by that speacilises in restoring old Jap bikes. I spoke with the owner and he has a road and a race GSX1100 and he has agreed to look over the engine and tell me if it's a goodun or not. So long as I pay him to do a top end rebuild if it's got a clean bill of health.

Thank you all for your help and advice so far.

P.S. some of these photo's may seem a little odd, I thought that they might help someone identify it's true year. The thing that has me most confused is rear mud guard, in all my searching I have never seen a GSX1100 with a chrome gaurd or rear light like that.

Dosent look like an ET to me. Wrong forks and yokes and also tank really not an ET. Thinking it some sort of GS1000 with a GSX donkey in it. Check engine mount under generator cover to see if it is a removable triangle or a welded mount. If welded and part of frame then not GSX !  Forks should be leading axle type and tank mount would be a tab welded on the underside at the back and not 2 tabs on the rear seam.

Thanks Jonboy, I'm going to put in some garage time later and will report back my findings. The sanctions on the forks are totally knackered and I dare say the springs, oil and seals are too so I will look for a complete B12 front end for it.

It depends on what you want really but as the pro builder ( snigger) has done what he has done you could just keep it simple. I hate everything  the CR ( can't even bring myself to spell it full) obsession stands for but these bikes are all about that engine. There would be no harm in keeping it clean and simple. It would avoid paying through the nose for original body work.

Do it in matt black though.

Very true and the same thing has crossed my mind. It's certainly easier than tracking down all original parts.

There was a great bike shop near me that built this GS750. If I was to go cafe I'd like to do something similar.

Welcome. It looks like an ET to me. What's the engine number if it starts with GS11X it is.

If you can weld that's half the battle. Here is a link to an article on bracing the frame. Not that it's neccessary for the standard motor.

A complete front end from swap often involves as little as a bearing swap and lock stops. In exchange  you'll get actual brakes, modern rubber and loose a fair bit of weight.

You can get up to a 160 tyre on a 17 wheel into the standard swing arm with a bit of spacer making and sprocket carrier skiming. The chain run and wheel alignment are all just a matter of spacers and light machining. So SV650 Bandit 6 etc are straight forward and offer a world of modern rubber. Otherwise for a 180 the B12 arm with twin shock mounts is popular.

You could always improve the front and back end and lash it up for the track. Great engines and it came free it wont matter if it gets dropped.

Thanks mate, much appreciated. Will take a look at the article too.

    Hi and welcome.

    - Remove the engine from the ET

    - install the ET engine in the '60s Norton

    - win

    [/end thread]

Ha Ha! I like the idea, would be a squeeze!

Hi bud. Welcome to OSS. Get to 50 posts and you can see the projects forum. Also the for sale and wanted sections open (y)

Thanks mate, I was a little hasty with my post by the looks of it, I'm new to forums so currently looking through other threads for answers. Will be good to see the Projects and for sale/wanted section. That will be a big help.

    welcome to OSS.info

before you make any rash decisions take a bit of time out and read through some of the threads in our awesome projects section, you'll find a lot of info that'll help smooth out those nasty rashes.....

.....also take 5 to RTFR, as they're informative, amusing and active.

kool start to OSS.....looks like an et

you gotta' love them pro bike builders

Will do, thanks for the info.

Looks ET to me, deffo an ET tank at least.

B12 swinger goes in with top hat spacers, plenty of folk on here can make then for you. If your staying twin shock then you'll need mounts welded to the arm; again load of folk on here can point you the right way

B12 front ends go right in but you'll need to swap steering stems iirc as the B12 is quite long.

You'' find all the bits you need here! Keep the pics coming! Once you suss out exactly what model it is, id suggest asking about for either a scrap frame or an imported frame that would be ballache to get on the road (no NOVA docs etc) and chop the arse off that and blue glue onto yours (y)

    Thank mate, appreacite the help.

  16. Hello,

I'm new to the site and I'm hoping some of you well informaed people can help me with some info. I recently received a project bike that had been given up on. The previous owner builds custom Harley's and decided this wasn't for him. He told me the bike was running before he started and let me have it for nothing. I'll list the story of the current state and then my questions.

He's a pro bike builder but here's the catch...he knows nothing about a motorbike other than HD's and has made a pigs ear of this so far. The engine is intact but he removed all the covers (for blasting and coating apparently) and didn't label a single bolt! the cams have some slight surface where they have been sitting but I think (hope) it's all OK. I can crank the engine using a wrench.

The frame has been chopped and looped for a cafe seat, but its badly welded and has been drilled for a cafe seat by a one eyed drunken chimp standing one legged on a wobbly stool! or at least that's how it looks.

The forks are pitted badly and need a complete overhaul and new sanctions.

There are no clocks, no seat, no lights, no gear lever selector, no rear brake pedal and no wiring loom, but hey! it was for free!

I've been scratching my head wondering what to do with it, I think I want to try and do a resto mod on it (close to original looks with some improvements). I've been scouring Eblag for another donor bike but they seem to be worth quite a bit,. There are some parts out there on Eblag and on CMSNL but here is my biggest problem, I don't know what I have! the V5 says its from 1983 and its original colour is black but a small amount of research suggests the silver coloured engine is from 1980-82. I think the tank is wrong too.

I'll attach some pictures so you can see what I'm working with, my questions are:

Can you help me with the model? E? ET? a frankenstien of parts bins?

Apart from Eblag/ CMSNL where can I get parts?

I've read some things about GSXR (all) and Bandit 1200 front ends and swing arms fitting fairly easily, has anyone got a conversion guide or similar?

Anything I should know before trying this build? I'm fairly green. I have a 60's Norton that I service and keep running but otherwise inexperienced in mechanics, only positive is I can MIG weld and read a Haynes manual like a demon!

    Thanks in advance,

    Michael.
