  1. Any ideas what might have caused this damage?

    The crank gears look fine.

Why just those teeth? I carried on riding for over a thousand miles after first noticing the rumble from below.

Would having to bump start the bike a few times when the battery began to fail put to much stress on the gears?

    Any ideas gratefully received

    Cheers

is it deff a gsx 11 and not an efe? i seem to recall that the efe primary drive has a tooth or two different and so whilst it will go on, any attempt to turn the engine over will lock everything up because theres just no clearance.

Unfortunately not JR, it’s from an EZ but has Grumpys back plate modification, I wonder if it had a tougher life previously to me ragging the arse off it!!!

Well...you did mention is had some play / movement / slack on the clutch before...

Maybe a previous owner tightened of the nut before positioning it correctly?

Yep, I’m sure that’s the connection as well. Just curious as to the cause. Apparently drag racers have seen similar damage so maybe I shouldn’t wear the wife’s undies at traffic lights anymore!

  4. Had a root about in there last night, there was about 1mm of play with the main clutch nut even though the lock washer was still doing it’s thing. Doesn’t seem to be anything else amiss apart from a few marks probably caused by the movement.

Would that have been caused by the clutch plates wearing? They are still within tolerance and the steels look perfect.

    Thanks for your help chaps

unfortunately, ive not yet found another set of clocks with matching internals to the kat, though im sure theyre out there. if your odometer isnt working, it might be worth stripping and cleaning the interior workings as they might just be sticking.  but be super super careful with the needle mounts, theyre incredibly delicate, and if im stripping a set, i prefer to cut the needles off and fit new ones rather than try to lever them off. theres a guy on fb selling reproduction replica needles, or, if you can source them, the needles from mitsubishi shogun/pajero 4x4's are the same, albeit a touch longer so you need to delicately trim them.

Cheers JR, I’ve already replaced the needles after they decided to make a bid for freedom!

I’ve actually had this issue for over 10 years !! Still its kept it a low mileage motor! I asked the question as I wanted to see if there was a known replacement set of workings that I could source before diving into them again.

    Thanks for the help fella

  6. Anyone know if the workings of my Kat clocks are the same as others of the same period? My speedo is working but the odo isn’t. While this has the advantage of keeping the mileage low it’s a pain in the arse when I just pass a garage and then need reserve!

I’m hoping I can cannibalise another set for it’s drive gear that’s given up.

    Cheers
