Caliper Upgrade

Recommended Posts

Sorry, no suggestion for any direct caliper replacements.

The feel and force of the stock EFE/GS1150 front brakes was terrible from new. From the rock hard lever and poor deceleration performance I deduct a mismatch between the master cylinder and the calipers on these bikes. It would be interesting to find out if fitting a smaller bore m/c could actually correct this and produce accepable braking performance using the stock calipers and discs.

Smaller gives better power but increased lever travel. Bigger bore gives a firmer feel but reduced power. To get the best of both world's, this is why the radial front master cylinder was invented. If you want to keep the stock EFE forks, wheel and discs maybe try what arnout suggests and also different pads. Changing pads often has almost miraculous effects on braking performance.

Won't make any difference - it's a cylinder with a set bore size but adjustable lever ratio. The bore dictates the pressure and the lever ratio dictates the feel!

Crap brakes won't get any better with a fancy master but they may if the master (however it is operated) is correctly sized!

GSX1100E, no, I have braided steel lines, recently trued discs, fresh linings...and I still don't like the braking. I know it can't be my TL1000R or refitted GSXR with 6 piston calipers, but I need better stopping. That's why I'm considering getting a bracket made to adapt Brembo (at least) 4 piston calipers.

You can fit GSX 600F wheel and discs with 4 or 6 pot calipers on STD legs. I would use a 17mm master. I have upgraded a 88 Slabby on STD brakes with a master cylinder off a Yam XJR and got much better brakes.

Same trick in Vmax using the XJR M/C

I was sure there was an upgrade to 4 pots. Seem to remeber it being on the the Old GS4 web forum a long time back. Will see if i can find.........

Seems the Captains link may have encompassed that modification, maybe the anwer is to fit a wheel discs and calipers as shown :).
