GS Guy Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 (edited) Hi Guys, I have a 1980 GS550 I am wanting to mod a little, front end and rear end swaps basically. I've been looking all over for info and i can't find exactly the answers that i need. So far i understand the GSXR750W USD complete front end is a direct bolt on with no mods? Are there any other USD direct bolt ons? Lastly, what options do i have for a bolt in swingarm that will take a 17 inch wheel? Many thanks advance! ps: im sorry my first post is begging for info, im stuck in the middle of a build with cash to spend! Here's some pics of the bike, It was a garden find that was sat for at least 30 years. the one next to it was a Gurls blouse xbr500 thumper that i also had from there but i sold it a few weeks back. the gs is now stripped to the frame for de lugging and trimming for a seat unit. busa ash Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 your in the right place as we all started searching and found old skool suzuki forum , pop some pictures up of you before modifications bike Quote
GS Guy Posted August 31, 2016 Author Posted August 31, 2016 Added some pics to the first post chap. Quote
completecaferacer Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 i have put a gsxr750 (m i think) front end on my gs550 spoked wheels busa calipers and custom discs - had to press the stem out of the yoke and swop them over. i put a mechamax swinging arm on mine from a gs1000 with 5" spoked wheel ive stuck with 18" at back and front Quote
GS Guy Posted August 31, 2016 Author Posted August 31, 2016 I saw your build, looking good! No one around my part of the uk will do a stem swap, they say its too dangerous and they dont want anything to do with it, which sucks! Just covering their backs i guess. The 92 - 95 GSXR750w uses the same bearing size as the gs550, but i guess its the stem length that also matters. i have read in a few places they are a direct bolt on but can't find a confirmed post from anyone who has actually done it. I did consider GS500 and gsx400/600 forks just to get the 17 inch wheels on the bike. Quote
completecaferacer Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 Yep the later550 uses the same bearings as some of the usd forks but as you sayits stem length that differs.i have no idea why stem swaps are risky. When its all bolted up where can it go as the forks will hold it together, we have done loads eithou problems.Ive got some spare gs500 front ends as ive put a 750srad one in my gs500 with gt500 engine. GS Guy Posted August 31, 2016 Author Posted August 31, 2016 If you are in the UK, would you press a stem in for me? would pay of course. would broaden my options a lot. Just let me know a price chap. Quote
GS Guy Posted August 31, 2016 Author Posted August 31, 2016 I see someone has editied my 1st post, or is it automatic when the H word is said? hahaha Quote

completecaferacer Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 Most suzuki forks will fit but dont forget if you are going 17" front wheel you will need longer forks like gsxr1100 as opposed to gsxr750. There is a fork comparison chart on here somewhere and google have a look for the longer usd ones. Cant post prices Quote
GS Guy Posted August 31, 2016 Author Posted August 31, 2016 i knew about the length chap, need forks around 700mm in length iirc. are you able to pm the price? Quote
completecaferacer Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 Not got a clue what you are saying vizman Quote

vizman Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 if you use a teapot front end you won't need to swop stems Quote

completecaferacer Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 Teapot parts are dirt cheap and you could probably get the back wheel in too Quote
