Swirl's Harris

Got a gsxr 1100L motor of another site member a few months ago this is going to be the power plant for the Harris. Pressure washed all the crap of it, dried it of over night then started to strip it down. Plan is to fit hayabusa pistons, rods with a big valve flowed head, gsx 1100f cams  & 2mm spacor plate.

Split the crank cases this evening gears, dogs & crank look good, every thing looks alright apart from the black sludge in the bottom crank case. Got some busa pistons & rods of another site member Had a set of b12 barrels that I wanted to use as the sleeves are 1mm thicker than the 1127 sleeves. I dropped the barrels of for a re-bore at the local machine shop the other day. Got a call of the this morning to say they were ready. Also got a 2mm spacer plate in the post.

Is that piston back to front but in the right / wrong hole -  or is that how it came from the boring place?

Only reason I ask, is I thought the 'larger' valve cut-outs on the piston would be for the inlets - I know it's not assembled, just looks odd?

Well spotted, last one I built I put the dot at the back did over 100 miles with it like this untill @colinworth79pointed it out to me, whipped the top end of turnd the pistons round & all was good. Apparently the gudgen pins are slight of centre.

Enjoying following your build, any idea what motor the frame was built for?

What about the motor for the red frame, there seem to be so many differences when you look at them closely.

I'm trying to build my own frame, very similar to a magnum 2 so ive been looking at a few.

Like the turbo, you do like a challenge!

Yes love a challenge, was surprised how different the 2 magnum 2 frames are. The green one was for a early Z motor the red one had a GSX 1100et motor .

Ive measured a harris frame that was built for a gpz1100 , the tubes either side of the motor have different bends and the tubes up to support the seat aren't parallel , it doesn't matter where they are but they are not a mirror image of each other.

Things of beauty none the less.

when working with a mag 3 frame - quite surprised at the lack of symmetry and also the quality of the tube bends  - obvious bending die marks - tube ovaling etc.. - cutting into some of the bronze welded joints - you can find in some patches pretty significant gapping between parent parts in sections  - great thing was - given quite severe tube damage - post crash - when jigged - the steering head was spot on perpendicular to the swing arm axle  - the bit that counts - it was though 2mm off centre if you were to presume the frame was supposed to be centered between the inside faces for the swing arm pivot - wrong presumption

It is valuable info for any home builder - getting things right is always right but it shows that you can have some flexibility in how you get there

I had a P&M frame stripped at the same time - now thats different, no die marks, ovaling and very much closer symmetry - I didn't open up any of the welds but I'd suspect they are as tight as a nuns stockings - overall workmanship here is in a different league

Not done any thing with this for a couple of weeks been fitting a JMC swinging arm to the turbo scratcher & Christmas got in the way a bit.  (Lots of beer). Tidied the workshop up a bit as well can now move round in it. Took the oil pump of for inspection, all looks good so put it back together againe. Have ordered a impact driver & a stud extractor to help strip the rest of the motor down.

Can not do a lot with the engine at the moment so had a look at the back wheel & swinging arm. Wheel is about 12mm of centre & would not go to the front position on the chain adjusters because the tyre was hiring the arm on the right. Hey ho cut it in 1/2 againe made a spacor up on the lathe. Looks like it will work now.
