HUM Posted March 10 Posted March 10 Hello everyone Today I took the clutch apart because it's juddering/hopping... Question for the experts 1.) I noticed that the outer basket (that's what I'm calling the part the clutch plates engage with) has play, both axially and in the bearing. (You can tilt it a little, about 1mm) imagine the axial play could be something... but tilting?! What's acceptable? The inner basket (where the steel plates sit) has no play at all. Nothing rattles excessively during operation, the clutch just judders/hops as if something is out of round... 2.) Which way do the steel plates go in; rounded teeth facing outwards or inwards? Or does it not matter? (They were all a completely random mix, one like this, another like that...) I'd appreciate some support Cheers and don't fall! Uli Quote
Gixer1460 Posted March 10 Posted March 10 The basket spins on a needle roller bearing so there will be a 'degree of looseness' so some movement is possible / probable. Juddery / draggy clutch is usually hammered / notchy hub which can be filed smooth but rarely works for long time. Steels can go in either way - its not important although I used to put all in same direction, one way or the other! Others may have other opinions. Quote

Others may have other opinions. On drag bikes I prefer putting the rounded edges inwards. The idea is that the pack can compress as smoothly as possible during launch. Following the same logic you probably should put them other way around on street bikes to make it release more easily. But to be honest I'm not sure if it makes any noticeable difference. 1 Quote
