have you tried it on prime ? that should fill the float bowls up.

yes mate, tried it on prime. 

ill pull the carbs when i get a half decent day, give them another clean i suppose. 

the more im dicking about with the little 600 motor, the  more i wish i had just lobbed in the 1100

Before you take the carbs off, I'd do 3 things first.

1. Take the fuel cap off, so the tank is open to the air.

2. Unscrew the carb float bowls drain screws.

3. Turn the tap onto prime.

At least this way you will know if fuel is getting to the carbs with a good flow and to each carb
