Stick Coils "COP"

So from what model are the prefered coils ? 

I've seen some conversions and they protrude a lot more than to old plug caps do

They all seem to - haven't seen 'short' or 'shorter' COP's! I've just fitted GSXR1000's and they poke out 40 - 50mm on a 1127 engine.

These were the shortest I could find, gsxr600 if I remember right

 

not sure how much they stick up, I can measure them if you like, and get the part number off of them

Only if you have an ignition controller with adjustable dwell control... Not good if you just want to replace the stock coils with stick ones and keep using the stock ignition unit.

Its true - depending on the coil make / type, there are dumb and active types! Dumb COPs are just like normal coils that charge and discharge without variation. The smart active types have to be told to switch on to charge and then, when to discharge - so can vary the spark point to suit what engine wants at that moment - quite clever really but electronics and programming intensive. Stick to dumb coils (generally two wire) for easy life!

Something like that but not exactly  "Smart" coils have built-in power driver stage, "dumb" coils don't so they need separate driver, either integrated into the iginition controller or separate module. Pretty much all bike coils are dumb.

Dwell control requirements doesn't depend on smart or dumb coil type. Although virtually all smart coils need accurate dwell control from the controller. But also many dumb coils need that. 3 Ohm coils that are used on many carb era Jap bikes don't need dwell control since their relatively high primary resistance limits charge current at safe level any ways but at the same time it limits available spark energy. Stick coils on later bikes are designed to be used with proper dwell control. But when you connect a pair of them in series the resistance gets high enough to keep them safe even when used with older ignition units. Usually.

I did stick coils on the gax1157et and wiring them up is a lot easier then you think, even I could do it

I ended up getting 4 from AliExpress for £20....

They read good on a meter so time will tell
