howto install digital rpm meter to GSX750 1981?

Hi! I want to use a digital speedometer with RPM. The GSX750 1981 uses a RPM wire from top of engine to the old RPM meter. How do you get a rpm signal to the aftermarket unit? 

Ive heard that take a cable arround the cylinder cable is not always so good. Any other idea?

It depends on your tacho/speedometer. See the user manual to check what options are supported for tach signal. But usually you can connect it to the negative wire of one ignition coil. 

Getting good rpm signal for the tacho is always kind of gamble with this kind combinations. With some luck it can work just fine right away. In worse case you may end up fighting with jumping rpm readings forever...

I have used both Koso and Daytona aftermarket guages. The tacho is wired as in the diagram below (this is from the EFE manual).

I've got a MMB tacho, this one you can adjust how many pulses it needs/gets.

 

As mentioned before, read the installation manual, should have all the info you need.

I have an acewell tacho that can get a signal with a wire around the spark plug wire or a wire connection to the coil negative.  The latter has proven to be the most reliable
