GS 1000 Essential upgrades

Interesting, but wrong.

78 has fluted tank/tail with stripe, black airbox, round passenger pegs and choke lever on the carbs. Yours may have been manufactured in late 78, but it's a 79. Picture of my 78 that I bought new. It's the wire wheel version, which I understand is not common in the UK

* bullet nr. 1 in the John Carr document :

In 4 decades everything from wheels to tank and engine etc could have been changed. But if judging by pictures  BigT is right - those parts are not 1978.

* bullet nr. 2 in the John Carr document :

I would be interested in what John Carr means by "the official Suzuki engine and frame number charts".

The only Suzuki charts i am aware of are in Suzuki service bulletins.

Check the attachments, these show the chassis cannot be a 1978 - same for the engine.

Without better info on the resources used, i cannot really comment.

 

John does not mention correct parts : he only states the frame number is one that was manufactured in 1978 which is probably true.

The model is a 1979, manufacturing of those started in 1978.

The only problem with saying what model/year a 30/40+ year old bike is by the tank or wheels etc it has is/can be very miss leading, as them parts could of been changed most of all tanks.

I myself years back when a gs1000 was only worth about £800 if you where lucky, built a gs1000 for a mate out of a box of different bits, the reg plate said it was a 79 model but it had a gs1000g tank, gs1000s side panels, gs850 yokes and forks etc etc.  The engine didn't have a head on it so I put a CV head on it as I had one.

so what model/year was it?

If you can see where I'm coming from ;)

exactly. I guess John his first statement is a bit misleading - it feels like he verified the correct parts based on the pictures.

Guess he was trying to be helpful ?

Must have been quite a job fitting that GS1000G tank on a chain frame Wraith.

It was meny meny years ago about mid to late 90's but I can't remember it being as bad as some (ie fitting a gs650 kat tank to a gs850) :D and yes a lot of people thought the bike was a gs650 just because of the tank xD But it had a gs1000g fitted to the 850 frame the engine was 1148cc stag 2 cams 35mm CR carbs etc etc

I see where you're coming from, but, I don't see someone swapping the 3 carb parts, the triple, the triple cap, the cable, and the triple cover to a 79 spec,  just for the choke, when just leaving the choke lever on the carbs would not require all that

Plus, who would swap the foot pegs?

I got a bit impatient and cheated a little bit by tading my Busa in for this 90% complete bike, just needs tyres and front suspension sorting out so that’s taken priority for the last few days..

hoping to get the pig back up on the bench tomorrow
