Teapot oil cooler question

Hi gents (and gentesses). I'm building a HUC outlaw trike using a '97 GSX750F engine. The front end is going to be quite skeletal, small tank, girder forks etc, but the standard oil cooler looks like a bloody sail, plus its been well battered so I'm hoping to replace it with something narrower. 

Would it be OK to run a smaller oil cooler, especially as the engine and cooler are going to be totally exposed?  or maybe use a narrower 16 or 19 row cooler?

yeah 600 bandit use a pretty small one, 1200 is a little bit bigger but ok.  but what ever one you use get the right oil pipes for that cooler.

This is an unusual question to ask on OSS because on here it is almost mandatory to use on an oil cooled engine a large aftermarket cooler with fancy fittings, and preferentially an additionally head cooler too.

I've ran a 16 row on my 1100 for a few years without any problems

Or you could mount it ( or 2 smaller ones ) somewhere else. Oil coolers don't have to go in front of the engine, just somewhere where they get a decent airflow.

Ran a b6 oil cooler on my 1127 engined chop, no problems.

Personally I wouldnt want to go smaller than standard, especially as the motor is going to be constantly working harder than stock, its going to be running hotter.

But sometimes that 'standard shizzle' helps direct airflow to and over the std. radiator ! I have to agree with MB49 - that is a lot more load for a 750 to lug, around so reduced cooling may not be the best direction!

Oh for sure, sometimes, but not on tpots, I’m pretty sure that was a bad styling exercise, no wind tunnels harmed in the making of that thing.

I don't mind keeping the same volume/area, as long as it's narrower. The standard cooler is nearly as wide as the back end! 

And yes, I'm in Norn Iron (Northern Ireland) and it does rain a lot, but this ride will see very little of that sort of thing.

I'd be tempted to run two smaller coolers either side. I remember @vizmanlooking at doing something similar on his silver cross pram (old Street fighter project build)

use a setrab with a smaller surface area but thicker core
