Gsx cam timing problems

Recommended Posts

A few thoughts;

1) Have you measure the cam chain under tension?  it might stretched.

2) Have the cylinders or head been skimmed?

3) Is the timing rotor correctly indexed?

4) Cams on the right place ( inlet on carbs side )? ( sorry have to ask )

5) Is the timing rotor a stock one or a 4° advanced version?

6) Has the ignition back plate been slotted to advance / retard ?

7) is the camchain tensioner working correctly?

Just a few pointers.

I am building up an 1170 motor.  A oproblem i have never encountered before.  I get to the 1-4 T mark and I cannot get it lined up.  It seems to rock one way or the other.   4 times i have done it and the cams are out.

Yes its a pain in the arse but you have to build it up before you find it's wrong - not having the tensioner in place allows slack in the chain runs. If you find its a tooth out - mark it with Tipex chain and gear, carefully loosen the caps off and move the chain to correct the 1-4 mark, replace caps and check again - obvs checking the right number of pins between marks on the cams!
