I’m about to get my frame, and swingarm ready for the build up of GS1000 project, what are people’s views on powder coat versus painting the frame? Obviously powder coating should be more resilient and longer lasting, but will painting be more true to original finish. Thanks in advance. Quote Link to comment

Dezza Posted February 11, 2020 Share Posted February 11, 2020 (edited) Make sure you take it to someone who knows what they are doing with bike parts. They will thus be less likely to lay it on with a trowel and do something silly like obscure the frame number, although some 'bike specialists' have done this. It's held up good I'll admit, I've even used it for some suspension and chassi bits for my datsun... But now that I have to redo the frame I'm thinking about powder coating it in stead. Poldark Posted February 13, 2020 Share Posted February 13, 2020 Rattle can in the back yard. In a couple years you may want to change things on your bike, or just change colors. Your cheap paint job will start looking bad by then, so you will feel good about tearing everything back down and re-painting. 1 Quote Link to comment

Sheep Posted February 14, 2020 Share Posted February 14, 2020 (edited) I have done powder coat/wet spray a few times but the last powder coat was a cock up due to the frame retaining some of the blasting media and the coater not shaking the frame enough to totally eliminate any excess grit...I ended up wet spraying the frame.. I do think a good wet spray using an etch primer will last longer than powder coat as powder tends to flake off if moisture gets behind it.Plus you tend to get a better,deeper look imo,powder tends to be a little plastic-like if you get what I mean!! Mind you you need to find a wet sprayer who is good at what he does to ensure a good job.. Having said that certain powder companies use some really trick colours/effects and your choice is much bigger nowadays.
